Running like a sloth!

Just finished week7 run 2......decided to run in the big park.....was overtaken by so many proper runners who didn't seem to have lead legs....unhindered I didn't stop... just about managed to overtake 2 women walking ...and ate about a million flies .

I actually think I walk faster than I run..😣

You are a proper runner so long as you're running. The speed doesn't matter. You've only been running a short amount of time so you're bound to be slower than other people. The aim isn't to go fast, it's to enjoy running and to get fit. As time passes and you keep running, your body will get stronger and you'll be able to run faster.

For now, just enjoy the ride and remember that there are loads of other people out there running like sloths (myself included). You've done so well to get to week 7! Good luck.

Thank u......spose 7 weeks ago I couldn't run more than 90 secs.

Some people look so controlled when they are running.x

I am amazed by the very different impact that a running motion and a walking motion have on exercising the heart rate, so you've no worries there.

And I have to tell you that I've seen a sloth get active, they can move when they see the need...

Bravo! (And commiserations about the flies, there's nothing positive to say about that)

Flys. Excellent source of running protein.

You ran without stopping - great achievement 🙂. Don’t worry about pace - I’m sure we’ll improve with time. 9 weeks ago I struggled to run at all & now can do 30 minutes (sometimes!) without stopping. I’m always being overtaken & often envy other runners their smooth style but still early days for me so will just keep on going! 🙂

Sloths, tortoises and snails 🐌 are all good runners,. You were running , not sitting on the couch, and running for an amazing amount of time. Be proud!

Just keep to your own pace that you are comfortable with. Being slothlike/plodding along seems to work just fine - it did for me anyway! You are doing great 😁

Slow and steady wins the race.....Well that's what I keep saying to myself as everyone else around me seems to be going faster than me, so you're not alone. Just keep going and remember that the more you do it the stronger and fitter you will get and then the speed will come. Just remember what you were like when you started and I guarantee your going faster and for a lot longer than that person 👍🤘

Hi, it doesn't matter at all what speed you go at, if you are running you are a runner, and have every right to call yourself a 'proper' runner, whatever that is. We all have our own pace that we run at and every time you go out it's an achievement, so don't beat yourself up about how you compare to other people.

Just be proud of yourself and your progress and keep plugging away. If you're on week 7 graduation isn't far way! You can make it and we'll all be cheering you on.

I also just completed W7R2 today. I ran like a snail. I had to pause half way as hayfever kicked in. Couldn't run and sneeze at the same time. I took it real slow once I got my breathe back. Managed but will need hayfever to calm down quick!

Actually I know I walk faster than I run. Hehe I am learning to race walk,😀. But on a serious note I have always been a slow runner and I learnt very early on to accept it. With acceptance comes pride and a feeling of accomplishment. If we always find ourselves pitting our pace against others most of us will get disillusioned as we are not all Mo Farahs. Once you find your own pace and see that change as you go through your journey then that’s when the real joy of running starts as you see what you are capable of, you don’t see that when all you notice is everyone else. You are doing so well.

You’re at the same point as me - I’m about to do W7R3 today - and I am SO slow most of the time. I just think to myself that my pace doesn’t matter so long as I don’t stop, it often takes all my willpower just to keep going, so you’re certainly not alone. One day we will be speeding along effortlessly (I hope!), we’re just working our way towards it. Slow and steady xxx

Love your post! Was totally how I felt last night running (limping?) through W9R1. Overtaken by everyone in the group I was running with. 😔 I know it doesn't matter, but at the time it does to me. Solidarity! After the event it's easier to feel proud about what we're achieving. Keep going! ❤

Well done!...30 mins .....in really not looking forward to doing it. But looking forward to the feeling when we succeed!!!....limping sloths and flies included. Xx

I know how you feel. I am a slow runner too and I get so annoyed when I got to parkrun and am in the stragglers; we have a very fast group here it seems and I always feel disheartened but the thing is it really doesn't matter. What matters is making the effort and doing your own best. It's taken me a while to accept this and I still sometimes get annoyed but what I most enjoy about running is just being outside and looking at the world around me. I'm just better being a solitary runner, lol. Sympathy for the flies, ugh!

I'm the same as you. I sort of accept that everyone is faster than me and that's ok but a part of me still wants to be faster. I also find that I just feel happier sometimes running on my own. Then only I know how slow I am ( and all my strava followers lol ) and no one usually overtakes me but I liked the social asoectjf runningcwith others. Dilemmas dilemmas. But the main thing is we are running 😁

I had to laugh when I read your post - it’s so like me. I run along a sea wall and feel really like a proper runner until I am overtaken by anyone under the age of 90!! I even have to speed up to overtake walkers and then slow down as soon as I can before I pass out. I graduated back in may and still loving the feeling when you finish a run. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before I actually enjoy the run 😂
