My gait is analysed - I'm special!

Hello lovely running mates,

So I had a spare afternoon, so I took myself off to my local Runners Need to see if they would do gate analysis, which they would. My "new" trainers are starting to get a bit worn, they weren't mega expensive, so I felt it might be worth investing in a better pair.

First hurdle is that I have never run on a treadmill in my life, and I just couldn't get the hang of it. I was terrified of flying off the back. But fortunately the lovely chap on hand had seen enough just from me walking in. Apparently I under-pronate, quite a lot, which would explain the wear pattern on the bottom of my trainers. He recommended I see a podiatrist, but given that that may take a while, I am thinking of at least buying some suitable insoles, he suggested what he thought I should get, so I might look at that, and armed with that, well, at least I have a plan of sorts! Obviously having new trainers with proper insoles will make me run twice as fast. Right? :)

Neil

If the insoles do make you speedier...I will get some... :)

Glad you are getting sorted... your 'gait' in the picture does look a little under pronated...or at least under the weather:)

Hope you get sorted soon :)

Haha yes indeed! I had sort of worked out that I was under-pronating due to the wet footprint test, nice to have it confirmed though. Apparently running as is unlikely to harm me, but there must be a reason they recommend insoles, right?

I'm quite glad I couldn't get the hang of the treadmill, apparently I had to run at 8km/hr which is really fast for me!!

You would have flown it... :) xxx

I have heel supports, as I tend to land heel heavy.. or I did... they made a huge difference:)

I don’t think I have ever come across an under-pronator before! My, you are special, Neil! What sort of trainers did you end up buying?

Ha! Yes well... the helpful chat said that I should go and see a podiatrist and then I should come back and chose some trainers. I think the ones he was recommending were something like £150. Yeah right! So what I'm planning on doing is going to somewhere slightly cheaper and buying some new trainers and appropriate inserts! It's a minefield, I tell you. Maybe I should just learn to run in bare feet :D

LOL! My last pair were £130 - eye watering! Now I am confidently neutral, I am definitely going to look for a bargain online next time. I really want to try Saucony or OnCloud...

Are you really going to a podiatrist?!

Yes Mummycav, I saw what you did there. Put your foot right in it!! :P

Thanks though, yes I do too, as I think I have squeezed most of the life out of the new trainers I got mid-way through C25K lol

That's brilliant Neil, I think it's so important. I bought the Asics trainers that the chap asked me to try on to run in and as it happened, out of 2 other pairs, these were by far the best. My foot fitted inside and not as if it needed more depth, whereas the more expensive brands like Nik, felt very uncomfy. I have 3 pairs of Asics now, 2 the same model and one different, I wear the pair I bought at my gait analysis with the £25 'Air sole' insole, so quite expensive really for my first pair, but those insoles are the best. I'll find out the proper name and let you know.

I can't remember what my pronation is now, I've got a little video too that my son took from the screen at the time, but all I know is my left foot, when hitting the floor, slightly rolls inward, due to high instep.

I bet you felt a bit weird on the treadmill, it was too quick for me, I felt I was going to fall off, lol.

Did you get to try different style trainers on and then do your 30 sec run, or did they get you to do it in your own trainers? That's another 'step' in the right direction Neil, 'scuse the pun, lol x 🤣🤣🏃‍♂️👟👟👟

Oh everyone's making puns today lol *looks stern* puns are supposed to be my department!!

Regarding the treadmill bit, I failed miserably. Couldn't get the hang of treadmill running at all. I don't really like a machine dictating speed to me, so in the end he said that to be honest he could see when I walked in, that I was underpronating due to a high arch, and that he recommended trying some inserts. So no treadmill running was done!

Ah well ;)
