Finally moved on to week 2

I am almost 57 years old and have never run before, I always worried it would be too hard on aging knees! Got a new fitbit however and found this app and thought it would be a challenge to try!

I really struggled on week 1 and ended up repeating it, it was still grueling! My son was telling me to go slower (before I found this forum), but I didn't think it was possible, it felt like I could walk almost as fast!

Started week two today and really focused to slowing it down and I found it so much easier than week 1. Definitely knee and calf pain, but I found some great stretches on youtube and complete about 10 min of stretches after the run.

Well done for starting, like you, same age never run before and here I am end of week 7 and addicted! Who ever thought it possible, not me. Won’t be long until you get just a little hooked 😂

Yes, always slow down! Especially as the runs get longer. You’ve got this! Stick to this forum for sure!

Same age as me when I started having never run the length of myself

Knees get stronger 💪😃👍

Slow running builds legs. That and rest days 🙂

In the very beginning I "ran" 3 days in a row and was so beat and sore, then I noticed there were rest days, yay!

Well done koco. Keep at it.

I am 60 and never run before and now I’m running for 25 mins!!

Well when I say running , it’s still a very slow jog and don’t always find it easy but it’s a lovely feeling being out in the fresh air. Good luck

Amazing, good for you, I didn't think I could ever run for 25 min, but I am very encouraged by everyone's comments! My short term goal is to make it once around our local high school's track! (1/4 mile) :)

Congratulations! Like you never been a runner, and even older, but I followed the programme and always did the post run stretches and it worked. I even got to 5k, two months after graduating. I have a knee that sometimes hurts so always wear a simple under knee strap I bought online that fastens withvelcro. It gives extra support so maybe try those? You will also find exercises online to strengthen the knees, or rather the muscles around them. Good luck.

Do you always wear the support or just when it’s playing up?

Always if I remember. It’s unpredictable - hurts sometimes when walking down steep hills or steps. Running regularly and the knee exercises have helped a lot but I want to be on the safe side.

Thank-you, all the responses have been so encouraging, it's nice to get so many replies from people my age. I will have to try a knee strap!

When people say slow, it's just fast enough to have both feet off the ground at once. My husband walks alongside as I 'run' , rather jog, and I've posted elsewhere about my son jogging backwards in front of me shouting encouragement! So I am really slow... But ran for 16 minutes this morning which I would never have believed when I was gasping for breath after the first minute of week 1!! As you get into the programme, and you will, look up the FAQ pinned posts and think about getting decent running shoes when you get to week 4. They SO make a difference! X

Well done you! I’ve done my 3rd week one run and am wondering how I can run more then one minute? What does week 2 entail?? It is all very addictive though! Especially with you lot out there encouraging us on! Wonderful....

Week 2 is run for 90 seconds and walk for 2 minutes. Slowing down my "run" was the key for me, I think! We will see how tomorrow goes. I also started listening to music, enjoying that. I run around the local high school track, it's softer than pavement.
