Week 4 Run 1 - Help!

Just did W4R1 and that was as tough as W1R1.

I did the 1st 3 runs no problem, taking it steady. runs 3 and 4, which is 3mins and 5 mins is straight uphill, 230m according to map my run. I didn't make it. Stopped 2 mins before the end of run 4, walked to the top, then did the 2 mins on the flat.

I know I worked so so hard today as I registered 16mins in peak heart zone according to my Fitbit, so far the max has been 5 mins in peak zone.

I don't know how to do this? I chose C25K for convenience. I really don't want to have to drive for a flat route. Do I A) keep doing what I'm doing and hope I improve enough to make it to the top? or B) turn around sooner than the halfway point so the last few mins are on the flat?

I have slowed right down for the hill. The problem is, in week 4 the 2.5min recovery walk is downhill! πŸ˜‚

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Oh my! I think you're doing great even to just attempt a hill so don't be too tough on yourself for not making it.... Keep trying and one day you will ☺

Although I'm a graduate I'm only just trying hills now. I had to walk up the other day too. Is there no way you can plan a flatter route? I live in a hilly area but will turn round four times to avoid a hill!! (Seriously, that's what I do)

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I think keeping turning around is what I'll have to do for this one. I just like the different scenery.

So far I've been running towards a pub, never made it before. Today got there and beyond, and back past again which is more of a miracle! πŸ˜‚

Hmm, Maybe I can take my car, park at the pub, run uphill to start and down to finish then drive home? It wouldn't take too much extra. Otherwise I'll turn around before my 2nd 3 min run, so my last 5 mins is on the flat. I know I can do 3 mins uphill as I was doing that last week. Can always take the route the other way past my house if needed.

Thanks so much for the encouragement.

If you really cannot run any further up a hill, why not just turn round and run back down. it may muck up your route planning, but at least you will keep running. Next time you can see if you can get just a bit further up the hill.

I had to change my route, by adding a loop on level ground, in W6, just to avoid finishing all my runs up a steep hill, which I christened as LongSlog once I managed to conquer it.

Keep going, you are doing great.

Thanks, will also try that. It was my heart rate and breathing rather than my legs which stopped me, and I hadn't recovered fully in the 90 second walk.

I'll persevere.

Is it a circular route? Would reversing it help? I did w4r1 tonight and I can’t imagine adding a 230m hill to it 😨

Hi,

It can be circular, and I've chosen the less steep but longer hill. What goes down... πŸ˜‚

I'll take the advice if others and keep doubling back to keep it as flat as possible. My quads hurt! πŸ˜‚

Well done on doing W4R1. How did you find it?

It was hard - my legs are like lead, but managed 2nd 3min and 5min without stopping

Thinking about it... It cannot be 230m uphill! Ben Nevis is only 1345m!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Judging from low and high on the elevation, it's 23m. My Fitbit registers 13 flights of stairs. That's a bit different!
