My first post - just started Couch to 5k

Well I downloaded the Couch to 5K app on Tuesday and today was my second run. I’m finding this first week ok. I’m 65 (nearly 66) with osteoarthritis in my left knee. I’ve never been a runner and thought the arthritis was a good excuse to avoid it, but as an avid fitness fan I needed something to challenge me. I saw a programme where one of Mo Farahs physios said running helps arthritic joints by strengthening connective tissue, so I thought I’d give it a try. Not sure 9 weeks is enough to get me running for 30 minutes, but knee problems permitting I’ll keep on till I do it.

Im 63 and did c25k at 60, and have niggly knee joints, not caused by running I hasten to add, and am fine when running, just get a zap of pain if I rotate on them slightly, and an iffy left ankle which came from ricking it a number of times in the early 70s wearing healed platform fashion shoes,😁 I can laugh now but at the time made me feel sick, but it feels fine now and believe the running is strengthening it, but still watch out like a hawk for any bad uneven ground and pot holes.

It's good that you are doing the programme pain free, just make sure you have a pair of good cushioning running shoes..😊

Thanks for your reply. It’s good to hear what it can do. I have an iffy right ankle due to platform soles!!! I have good trainers but I’m going to treat myself to some good running shoes.

Good morning and welcome. If you trust in the the program and believe in yourself you will do it. It doesn’t matter how long it takes if you need to repeat any of the runs/ weeks before going on to the next thats ok. It’s your running journey it doesn’t matter what others do, you are in control. Like you I had never run before, I am 73 and I’m thoroughly enjoying running. Some days I feel amazing after a run, some days I feel I struggle to run but the good feeling always wins. Take it slowly and steady, keep well hydrated try to get your gait analysis done so you can get shoes that are right for you.

So come on!!!! get started nice and slow, trust and believe. Good luck and enjoy .

Thank you, it’s good to know what others are doing. I will repeat a week if I have to. I want to be able to do each week before I move on. It’s so easy to make excuses otherwise. I’m definitely going to invest in good running shoes.

Joint pain from being overweight and drinking too much brought me to this programme aged nearly 57

It is brilliant. Your joints strengthen. I had an iffy ankle and knee when I started but not now 💪👍😃

You only need go very slowly No hurry at all 😃
