Running in warmer weather

I trained and completed the programme over a very cold winter and now that the weather is (finally!) warmer I’m struggling to run! I had to stop a couple of times today as I was so hot and tired!

I’m not body confident enough to run in shorts and a vest sadly, I like my long leggings and long sleeved tops!! I suppose my body will adapt and it will get easier over time?

Something I am thinking about also. My leggings are thin enough I think, so that’ll be okay. Just need to find thin baggy shirt that covers my bum and tum. Not helped either by my sister telling me “you are swinging, have you got a sports bra on”. I had 😔

I know what you mean! All the lightweight running tops are really short aren’t they? Summer running is going to be tough! ☀️

To be honest, if I ever see a larger than average person running, the only think I think is “good for you”! BTW I am also a larger than average “

That’s true, I think the same :)

Body cannot simply adapt if it gets too warm, and you are likely to overheat which is not pleasant by any account and can stop you in the tracks. I had the experience of running in extreme heat (temperatures of 30C plus), and all I could do, apart from constant hydration every day to prevent cramps or simply fainting, was to run either around dawn or after sunset. Please don't dress up and run in the sun, no good things could come out of that.

Thank you. Good advice.

Just to illustrate how it can affect even the trained long runners, a friend overheated during Paris marathon - and woke up in a medical tent. Remember, be comfy wherever and whenever you run. Also, nobody but you will be aware that you are running anyway, we are the invisibles! :)

The stuff that I wear, I wear because I like it (basketball gear), and not because of whoever is around.

Enjoy yourself, that is all that counts!

Once you start wearing shorts your legs will start to colour up and everyone will be admiring your tan (between the sock line and the shorts line!). Just keep cool and don't overheat.

Do you wear short leggings or loose shorts? (Just out of interest!)

Short leggings - I find them better for my chubby thighs. They have anti-ride tape around the bottom of each leg so stay in place. I have numerous tech t-shirts from various marshalling I have done over the past few years so wear one of them as they are generally big due to wearing them over a jumper at an event. They cover me quite well....

Thank you 😊

I got some Ron hill capris with those tapes inside the leg hems. You don’t notice they’re there but nothing rides up. I don't wear shorts either, but not ruled it out 😃

I wear vests a lot, but didn’t at first as I was much heavier when I started than I am now Tesco sell “burn-out” tops which are really cool, and the are long. Inexpensive too

Thank you for the tips, I’ll have a look for those tops in Tesco.

just go early in the morning before the sun heats up.

Early morning? What is this of which you speak???

I’ve occasionally done very late evening running - it’s not as nice as I’m sure an early run would be (temperature-wise, at least!), but is better than daytime.

That’s what I did last August, and it has become a lasting habit. It is glorious in summer, as it’s the only time the air feels fresh and it is much much cooler. I love it.

I like knee-length running leggings, and a long top. I discovered last night that my lightest top is longer than most of my others, so that makes me happy!

I don't mean really early morning, of course. You need to get your weight work in before cardio, and with warming up and waking up that's a good hour, but maybe like 0600 or so is good for a run. Still not too hot.

Late evening running is really just as a function of evading enraged husbands or police officers.

Also works well for avoiding the resident teenagers... ;) (Definitely not a benefit of morning running!)

I have just started week 7...in the same boat re: body concerns - however i have reached the point that i don't give a sh!t what anyone thinks - i am out there running and they are not! Lets see them do it!

I wear my normal leggings or capri length and this morning i took off my jumper/hoodie and had it tied round my waist leaving my racer back vest :-O - so probably looked even larger lol - but rather that than too hot.

I am going to look at some mens sports t-shirts though - as they unlike the women's ones actually have some length to them! That way its not concerning me.

Good for you! Good idea about men’s tops. I might start with Capri length leggings too and work up from there! Good luck with the last 3 weeks of runs...finishing the programme is amazing! 😃
