Asthma advice please πŸ˜€

Hi! I'm on a mission to be 'fabulous and fifty' next year rather than 'fat, flumpy and fifty'. I've bought myself a FitBit and a 2nd hand treadmill off eBay with the intention of doing 10,000 steps a day and losing 4 stone by Christmas. However I've just come across this so I've signed up to this to see if I might be able to build up my pathetically non-existant running skills! The problem is that I am asthmatic, only mildly but enough to prevent me running for more than about a minute without starting to wheeze. Has anyone with asthma had any success with this couch to 5k plan, or can they offer any advice to an asthmatic newbie?

I was mildly asthmatic. I used a preventer before bed and in the morning. I used it before a run, and when I needed during it after. I haven’t been wheezy since about week 3 or 4. This program has really improved my asthma πŸ‘πŸ½

We were talking about health benefits on a post I wrote. Maybe Tasha99 could help you with your question as mentioned the improvement in asthma

I’ve got asthma and if anything since I’ve started running my asthma has really improved. I always make sure I take my preventer last thing at night and first thing in the morning and then I use my reliever before a run and that seems to do the trick...touch wood I haven’t had to use it during or after a run 🀞

I had my annual asthma review just last week and the nurse was really pleased with my results , especially when I told her I had just completed the C25K πŸ‘

Hope that helps 😊

That's great to hear, and well done on completing the C25k! W1R1 is tomorrow morning, so I'll see how I go and fingers crossed that my asthma improves as yours has :-)

I was a chronic asthmatic before c25k - not anymore. I had my medication reviewed before I started and haven’t looked back. Running really helps and I no longer really notice that I have asthma.

Wow. I've never been able to run with my kids but reading all these comments is really encouraging and this actually might be life-changing if I can reduce my asthma through C25K! Right, I'm getting up now, grabbing my inhaler and going for it!! Thank you so much :-)

Go for it.... slow and steady, one foot in front of the other as our fabulous administrators will tell you. This is the first day of the rest of your life..... enjoy!

W1R1 done!! Thank you all for all your encouraging comments... Just getting past the 'I can't run, I'm asthmatic' mindset has been a major step forward for me this weekend, I actually feel quite emotional typing this as I never thought I would ever manage 7 x 60 second runs x

Well done on your first run!! You have taken the first step and I just want to reassure you how gently progressive the programme is and what a source of inspiration, support and advice this forum is. Enjoy! πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ‘

This is great news! Well done for getting started! I’m asthmatic and take my purple one an hour before running and then carry the blue but haven’t needed it since week 3 (now W5R2)

My breathing has really improved , I’m no longer having that annoying wheeze where I have to stop running when my body feels it could do more. X

Hi oldwheezer69 . I use the preventative morning and night but have hardly touched the blue in ages. Next week I start week 9 of C25k and while it's been a challenge, it's been great proving that not only can I run, I can run for 28 minutes (soon to be 30).

Assuming your asthma is appropriately managed then I would say 'go for it'. Your body will tell you if it is ready to stop, slow down, or take it a little easier. Don't listen to the voices in your head telling you different.

Thank you, my first run this morning was ok and I didn't need my inhaler, amazingly. You're absolutely right about the voices in my head!

Fantastic! Just remember they are your head voices and you can so change what they say - you are amazing and you are doing amazing things.

Welcome! By the end of the c25k programme you may have to change your screen name as you might not be wheezing much from what I've read on the forum here!

Remember that fat and fabulous aren't mutually exclusive! Fabulous is a feeling and fat is something we all have, in different quantities, but we all have it! So whether you meet your weight loss goals or not, you can still be fabulous and fifty!

You're absolutely right! I don't actually mind being a bit on the 'cuddly' side, it's being unfit that bothers me! I look forward to changing my screen name in 9 weeks time ;-)
