Running to a beat...

Does anyone else find it easier to just run to music they enjoy rather than stuff that has the right BPM for their pace? I was desperately searching for music that's fast paced enough (and enjoyable) but yesterday I decided to just put on my favourite mix of tracks with no particular beat in mind, and just run at a comfy pace. It was so much better than normal so I think I'll keep doing it πŸ˜„

I have everything from Jimi Hendrix to Thomas Tallis via Bob Marley and Radiohead on my phone, always on shuffle............. variety is the spice of life.

That sounds like my sort of eclectic mix IannodaTruffe!

I think anything that gets you β€˜in the zone’ and distracts you from what you’re doing is great. I don’t worry about BPMs but I love a track that has a big crescendo at the end, it really gets the adrenaline going.

Totally agree with this...mixing it up is good

Not sure I can find music with such a slow beat to match my running pace....unless the death march πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I found some music in approximately my slow bpm. It's not my favourite type, but it works :) And those are motivational songs for exercises.

When I was running to my music, I was running too fast and couldn't survive more than 60 or 90 sec, so I needed to change it.

I love running to music! That music starts and so do I! :)

Yes I just run to music I enjoy! I have never worried about bpm's. For me the main thing is the distraction. So carry on if it's getting you there! 😊😊😊

Depends what the goal is for the run. It would be dreary I think always to do running to the beat (and doesn't work so well for off road runners) but it definitely has a place.

I mainly run with nothing but birdsong, sheep, the river and the wind in the trees but needed a bit of company the other day. BBC radio podcasts: Gardener's Question Time and Ouch (a conversation between someone who lost his sight gradually and became blind as a young adult, and a man with spinal muscular atrophy who uses an electric wheelchair and needed his assistant to pick the questions from a cup) followed by Thinking Allowed on the difference between suicide bombers and actual sacrifice. Good stuff!

Thank goodness!! I thought I was the going to be the only one who said they run to a podcast!!

I run to sounds of nature only, nothing but real life and my own breathing. Or a podcast.

I find that way, my body and brain does what I want it to, and not whatvrhe music kind of wants me to. And also, I enjoy music in a way that I want to really appreciate it and I can’t do that when running.

I think it is fun to experiment a bit and different 'soundtracks' or none can have different uses.

Most of my music is still on vinyl or CD anyway, but in all honesty another factor is that I find putting together playlists a crashingly boring way to spend time (not a view shared by everyone)

Definitely works for me. I've got quite a long list now, they are all my favourites, so they all make me smile & distract me from the hard work πŸ˜‚

I run to all the 70’s music or a bit of morown. Not bothered about the bpm, happy with my old memories and bad singing voice πŸ˜‚

Yes absolutely- the enjoyment and psychological lift of favourite music is great! - Makes my brain want to dance along even if my legs can’t quite manage! πŸ˜€

Communards and Jimmy Somerville are my music of choice! Varying pace but doesn’t affect my running speed.

I use dance music but it has to be stuff I really like or it just grates.πŸ‘

I have to use music I like and preferably know well enough to provide the necessary distraction. I try to not run to the beat of the music but have caught myself getting caught in a fast paced song and pushing it. If I'm doing a really long run, I have a long playlist with slower songs to try and prevent that from happening.
