Runner's Tummy :(

Does anyone else get tummy pain after a run? I've had it on and off for 2 weeks now. I thought it was a bug but I've been reading about runners who have tummy problems. Any advice? I normally eat 1small avocado about 30mins before a run and have a cup of tea plus half a pint of water with a fizzy Bvit supplement (then another pint of water at the end of the run). I'm doubled up in pain about 2 hours later and then take peppermint oil to calm it down. A few giant farts later and I'm ok again (sorry if TMI!!) Anyone else with similar issues or should I see a doctor? Other than that I'm still loving my 3 runs a week. Still doing around 4.5k in the 30 mins but happy and feeling much fitter!

I used to eat avocados regularly and had to stop, they started giving me really bad stomach aches. Perhaps replace the avocado next run with a different snack and see how you feel?

Yes, I think I'll try half a banana instead to see how that goes. Might provide a bit more instant energy too. Thanks!

Half a banana highly recommended as pre run food :)

Me too. I used to love them but over time developed so much pain. Eventually it was fire and brimstone in my guts. Almost considered the emergency room last time I ate one. A colleague who has the same issue said his doctor told him some people can't digest them properly, but it doesn't show on an allergy test.

Possibly the fizzy bvit supplement? My son had to stop taking them for tummy aches and bad wind! Hope you can sort it asap sounds painful

Heck! Yes, it could be that! I'll try a different supplement to see if it helps. Anything to stop the pain and wind!! Thanks

Just stick with the tea would be my advice.........neither of your other pre run intake seem very appropriate.

Ok! Will do. Might put sugar in it though!

Why? If you don't normally take sugar there is no reason to take it in tea before a run. Ditto the fizzy b vit drink. Just keep hydrated all day every day not just before/after runs during c25k and, unless it is very warm, you shouldn't need any extra drink to complete the days run. Also, you shouldn't need any extra food either when running up to 30 mins

Eat earlier, and leave longer in between... check out the advice in the FAQ post...also.. have to say, that tea, (hot water)... and then cold water with a Bvit in...not a great idea... ?

Maybe simplify your pre-run eating..hydrate well, all the time, not just on runs days... skip the B vit.. and the peppermint oil ( yoga stretches will work just as well for releasing trapped wind)... and concentrate on a healthy eating regime which will give you all the things you need:)

I have a cup of tea before I run, that's it. I hydrate when I get home. I do suffer from a bad stomach when I get home as well. But not as frequently as I used to. I cycle as well and find my stomach is worse after a ride than a run. I have no idea if there is a solution but it's a transient thing so I can put up with it. As others say, might be the fizzy drink that's doing it. Check the same ngredients and google the side effects. Good luck.

i get terrible colic about 1:4 times I run, very annoying, very noisy (farting for England!) and then horrible runs to the toilet...

sometimes I think it's because I get a bit anxious before a run, but sometimes it's not leaving enough time after a meal... I would definitely concur that you should have the fizzy B vit after your run rather than before.... and wait 5/10 mins after a final small glass of water before you run....

Yes, it could be anxiety about the run too. I'm taking all the advice I can get on this! Thanks!

Absolutely no fizz before you run, and if you want to eat anything, make it bland and carbohydrate-y such as banana or porridge, and small amounts, and leave time for it to be digested. At this distance you shouldn't need much though. Hope you can get it settled!

Thanks. I'm going to try a cup of weak tea and a bit of banana. Giving up on the fizzy b vits for a while too. Let's hope it helps!
