Bad Run 😑

Went for my first post graduation run last night. It was just shy of a week after my last run because of icy pavements! It was not a good run!

I was looking forward to getting out again but have had a hectic week (dealing with attack on nits with 3 kids! boss away at work so long hours covering). About 10 mins in got a very painful stitch and had to start walking started running again after 5 mins and same happened again. Got a good nights sleep and going to eat well today (when I am busy I don’t always eat enough!) and am going to try again this evening.

Was wondering if anyone else had this experience and also any advice on dealing with this? Think it may be down to breathing and also not getting pace right!

We all have an unexpected bad run at some point - but remember that a bad run is still better than no run at all. And think back to the days not all that many weeks ago when you'd have been baffled at the idea of 'only' having been able to run for 10 minutes at a time...! ;) All of which really goes to say try to see the positives - they really are there - and be kind to yourself! Next time try to set off a bit more slowly, and just take it as it comes...

Happy running!

Thanks I went out tonight took it much slower and ran for about 35 mins. I was worried I had set myself back as enjoying it and having a stitch does take enjoyment out of it. The next run awaits! Thanks for advice 😀

It would probably best to take a rest day than go out again this evening. As already mentioned try starting off slowly and taking deep slow breaths. Hope it goes well.

I got a stitch last week on a harder run and figured I just needed to slow down and as I did, it did pass, but I just Googled it and Science has some other ideas about it that I had not even thought of... news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/he...

If it happens again I am going to test their two solutions out :):

Stop running completely and touch your toes.

Pressure on the area will help to relieve the pain. Use your fingers to press firmly on the painful area.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, it is VERY common. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips definitely going to try the touching toes thing! Ran tonight and it was OK. I am a new runner and was worried that because I hadn’t run for a week I had set myself back. Thankfully tonight’s run was OK. I am slow but I am still managing to run continuously for about 30 mins (tonight’s run 4.6k in 35mins).

Haha - I just need to remember that advice when it actually happens. Nah - don't worry about falling back from a short break like that. You are fine. :) Keep it up! You are doing really well!

as long as you are still smiling, then its working. :) Longer distances will come as your legs and lungs get used to the training.

I posted yesterday as I was getting stitches that were stopping me completing w9r3. Advice from others on here was to breath deeply and it worked! I went out yesterday and tried again, whenever I felt a twinge I'd carry on running, but slow down and breath deeply. Someone described it as 'belly breathing' and that really helped me do it properly. I breathed in very deeply through my nose and out through my mouth. I've tried other techniques like stretching or bending over but this is the only thing that actually worked. Everyone might be different but try it next time :)
