W6R1 'The Way Through The Woods'

The slight niggle in my knee after the final run of W5 had more or less gone but I thought I'd find some forgiving ground 'just in case'; I think I might become like some racehorses and only run well when the ground is 'good to soft'. So I pottered off to the woods down by the Moss to kick off today's little foray.

It was ok: not too bad at all really. I am finding that I recover very quickly after each period of running and am ready to go again after a minute or so...but that gives me time to enjoy the surroundings. Beautifully quiet down there today and I found myself thinking of lines from Kipling's famous poem:

' You will hear the beat of a horse's feet,

And the swish of a skirt in the dew,

Steadily cantering through

The misty solitudes,

As though they perfectly knew

The old lost road through the woods ...

But there is no road through the woods'.

It was really atmospheric down there with the wind howling through the trees and branches creaking like old men's bones. Or was it my bones?

Anyway, apologies if you don't like poetry...but he also made some exceedingly good cakes I believe?

Right, off now to prepare for the imminent invasion of Granddaughters: Grandad is Sixty tomorrow and they seem to think this is a cause for celebration (whereas Grandad begs to differ).

I will tackle W6R2 in my next decade.

Then I, also.... wonderful.... a kindred spirit :) x

Ah, how lovely, woods and Kipling. Looks beautiful. Are you wearing trail shoes for your woody forays or just your regular road shoes? Well done and a very happy birthday x

Regular road shoes: I just need to find a regular road around here now.

When I was a youngster I had a pair of shoes with animal tracks on the sole: I wonder if you can still get them? They would seem appropriate.

Thank you for your good wishes.

That is my kind of running! A very pretty spot. I miss my summer running through the trees at the lake where I spend my summer. At least it is something to look forward to next year, as I was plodding around town through the snow this morning (winter has returned where I'm at).

Happy early birthday! Enjoy the day with the kiddos; they'll keep you young at heart. And now with your C25k training, you can chase them around better 😆
