Any vegetarians out there? any tips on diet?

Hi there. Pardon me if this is not the right place for this post. I was just curious if there are any vegetarians on c25K.

I am a vegetarian (don't eat eggs either...but do take dairy) and occasionally feel the need to take a protein shake, otherwise I feel too tired the whole day.

Hi poijki

I'm a vegetarian. Apparently with vegetarianism the issue is not with protein but with B vitamins and iron. (You don't need as much protein as you think, and can get it easily from lots of sources as a veggie).

B vits and iron = much harder. You have to eat bags of greens to get your daily intake of iron, and B12 found in little else but red meat.

When you start running, you need more iron for good oxygen flow in the blood. I now take a supplement that contains both iron and B vitamins, and have definitely noticed an increase in my energy levels! I take Flurodix - a liquid supplement. Available from health food stores or pharmacies.

Happy running! 🏃

Trouble is that we read things on the Internet - and don't really know whether what is being discussed is of REAL and IMPORTANT meaning or just arguing over what is "better" - and "better" is judgmental. I have read that there are two kinds of protein - one comes from animals and the other comes from vegetables. They say that the animal protein is more "complete' than vegetable protein (something to do with amino acids) . But the significance of that to amateur runners like me is never discussed. Maybe it is significant if I want to run in the next Olympics?? :)

I get my information from my best friend, who works as a nutritionalist for the NHS. 😀

I am not nutritionalist, but let's say in biochemical area. The issue with amino acids is that human body need at least 9 amino acids that we cannot synthetized (of over 500 known amino acids). We need them regardless of our activity.

Thanks for your response Sadie....Personally I have never had trouble with iron...Because I do eat a lot of greens...(and other sources of iron)...But you are right, Vit B12 is a big problem and a lot of vegetarians I know (including me) had to get injections for it...

So thanks once again for reminding me how important that is...I will look at those supplements. :)

I am vegetarian. Haven't felt the need to change my diet at all really. I don't know how far through the programme you are but at the start I slept a lot. Don't think that's about diet, more about needing to build up my fitness levels.

BTW - can "vegetarians" eat eggs???? I am certain that Vegans can't .

Yes, if they choose to. Vegetarianism means not eating meat or fish. Veganism also excludes all dairy including eggs.

Generally Vegetarians eat eggs....Vegans don't. However most Indian vegetarians I know don't eat eggs either...(and they are not vegans)...but it could be just my sample...

My son is a vegan, and very very sporty. He doesnt suppliment his diet. He is howver very food aware and is in very good health. I often question whether he should take suppliments. He always says cows, who produce the diary, are total vegans and manage to grow to a very reasonable size whilst also producing gallons of milk.

🤔🤔🤔

I guess being "food aware" is the key here...His argument...very reassuring.

As we say regarding weight loss, you are not going to be burning many calories and although a good supply of protein is important to enable muscle repair, if you have a wide ranging, balanced diet, then there should be no need to change it to accommodate the extra exercise of C25k. There is no reason why a vegetarian diet should not provide all you need. Bear in mind that many top athletes are vegans.

I’m veggie and to be honest haven’t changed my diet yet . Now on week 8 so maybe now the longer runs or here it could be worth considering. I don’t like milk apart from in coffee so protein shakes would be made with water so not sure if if any benefit . Xx

My neighbour, and my sons GF are vegetarian, but neither like salad or veg 🙄 . You'd think they be food savvy but sadly not

Whatever you are be sure to eat a really varied diet to make sure you're getting sufficient nutrients to support your running etc Sleep too! Plenty of 😃✔️🏃‍♀️🏃

My niece is vegan but you have to be prepared to put the work in to make it work.

Forward planning is always a good idea 😇

Speaking of which, I made a fruity WW bread pud last night for tonight's dessert . The remaining portions are safely in the freezer

You are right about food planning...However being an Indian (gujarati) vegetarianism is so easy....There are just so many options...

And also I believe London(UK in general) is one of the best cities outside India for vegetarians....I spent a few months in US midwest and I don't think people there quite understood vegetarianism... :)

I spent a month in India and was overjoyed with all the amazing vegetarian dishes, poojki!

My sons GF is from the US and she admits to loving North American crap food, albeit vegetarian 😕

I love Indian food! I did some Indian cookery classes as I felt a bit backwards on the subject. My teacher was from Bengal and loved South Indian cuisine. She was a food preservation expert and was Really clued up on regional food. I think my fave thing to eat was sambar 😋

Oh really!!! I guess I shouldn't be too quick to judge then...Maybe just the US city I was in...

Ooh Sambhar!!! So wholesome and simple.... One of the best meals in life was eating simple Sambar rice in one of the villages in Kerala after a 13 km trek....

I've not made it lately as I can't get drumstick Still, I suppose I could substitute it 😋

We have a hotel/pub here which advertises itself as "THE WORST VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT IN BRISBANE" . Their advertisements and the size /quality of their steaks brings them a lot of business :)

I’m veggie, 2 and a half months past graduation, never changed my diet and I’m fine. On top of that I hate nuts, beans, mushrooms and have an allergy to Qourn! But have never felt lacking of anything to take any supplements. I’m currently running at least twice a week. I find I have more energy because of the exercise!
