Delayed visit to the IC

Yesterday started beautifully. A leisurely 1 mile run with my daughter's during half-term week. As I was off this week, and as we weren't going to be away, I decided to finally get round to visiting my doctor about my knee pains.

I have been suffering with my knee for months. Early on in my running, W8 of C25k to be exact, it had got so bad that I took a fortnight out before attempting to run W9.

Since then it has been manageable, and has even felt better since I have reduced my running to once a week. However, manageable Isn't really good enough is it? So, fortified with the hope of a nice referral to a physio I booked my appointment.

Unfortunately, doctors have a tendency to tell you what you need - rather than what you want - to hear.

So, possibly cartilage damage - but, definitely 1 month consignment to to IC. No running, no cycling and a few knee exercises - only then will we see whether further treatment is required.

Gutted!

That's so difficult but best you get it sorted rather than having left it..... I'm so sorry 🙁

Should have done it sooner, but at least it's winter now, so the layoff doesn't seem so bad.

Oh dear.... It might be worth getting it checked by a Sports Physio too.. sometimes, they have a slightly different and maybe more helpful; approach.. and designated strategies for what the issue is..they will tell you whether it is or is not cartilage damage too.

Good advice from Oldfloss there. There is a cost but it is likely you will be referred to a physio by your gp anyway. It would speed it all up.

Thanks. I've been told, if no improvement after 1 month then I will be referred on. So it's just a waiting game now.

Any walk-in Physio near you?

I was allowed to swim after damaging my knee ligament, but not breast stroke. Just front and back crawl. It took me 4 months before being discharged by physio but that was ligament damage which took a while to work with.

How did you damage your ligament?

I fell off a step on holiday and effectively fell two steps down and twisted the knee. It took me a few weeks to see the doctor who first said cartilage damage so completely rested the knee. Month later went back as it wasn't better and a different doctor diagnosed ligament damage and referred me to physio.

Okay thanks. My Dr said cartilage damage too. I am not convinced, but I think the break is a good idea to start. Mine is sore during and after running. Also, it does get painful on long car journeys.

Does it click? Both second Dr and physio said that the lack of confidence click suggested ligament. I still have knee support for running to help prevent sideways movement.

Although, ironically the knee injury led me to running in recovery. Fingers crossed that the injury couch helps x

No, doesn't click.

Thank you. I guess I should have gone sooner. I know I have been putting it off.

Thanks Jan, I know I have pushed it, so the imposed rest will do me good in the long run. I have big running plans for next year, being my 40th, and I hope that this month of no running will enable me to fulfill them.

Having been there I feel your pain. Use the time to build up other muscles perhaps? Strength and flex? Keeps some regular discipline and will help support the knee once you're back out there. Good luck. Hope you find plenty of patience to see you through the next four healing weeks ☺ mine simply went away and - so far - hasn't come back. Hopefully it will be the same for you.

Thanks Linda. The Dr gave me some knee exercises to do - so I will be focussing on them over the next few weeks.

It's great your pain just went away completely. It's what I am hoping too, one month out and I will be able to return back minus the pain I have been carrying for too long.
