Not fast enough!

Hi All,

Week 7 first run - last night, I plodded along and reached 3.37km in 25 mins. I felt I was steady and I’m really finding my pace now and I even picked up the pace a bit for the last minute and gave it my all, which was slightly up hill. I came to work this morning buoyant and full of excitement, only to be told I’m slow! And most people can run 5k in 25 -30 mins!

Am I on target? Will I be able to run 5k in 30 mins? I think it would take me 40mins + at the moment and I would die from exhaustion. I am feeling a bit deflated.

Hey Becky, very well done for coming this far, you are doing amazingly well, you are going fast enough, take no notice of the speed of others, gaining speed is something to think about once you are running for 30 minutes on a regular basis, at the moment it's about running at a comfortable pace, keep it up mate.

Hi Becky

first of all ignore them! We all run at different speeds and then when you finish this program and you can run for 30 minutes, get them to join you in a run, that will teach them. I graduated months ago and my fastest 5k is 40 minutes done only last week (walk/run)

As most people say "slow and steady" go through the weeks going slower if needed to finish, then consolidate 30 minutes running, then it is up to you what you want to do.

Good luck!

Stephen

Who said you were slow?? Kick them in the goolies!!

Becky, I don't cover 5k in 30 minutes but I do run (jog) for 30 minutes without a break so I'm happy at that, speed will increase with the fitness/stamina, etc, don't be too put off by not reaching 5k even when you graduate.

You're doing great, just aim to complete the runs and then, once you've got used to running for blocks of 30 minutes then look at ways to increase your pace, distance, etc.

Hi Becky,

I know this has all been said already, but C25K is about completing a 30 minute run/jog 3 times, and of course the training that leads up to it. The fact that it's name mentions 5K is, in my opinion, misleading! But as far as I know, the health benefits are from time spent exersising, not distance. So please don't worry about distance.

Personally, well I'm quite tall and have fairly long legs, but I'm still well off the pace for doing 5k in 30 minutes. You may well be able to manage it if you count the walking segments though.

Please don't be discouraged, you are doing really really well. Your time means you know how to pace yourself and what your body can handle and sustain. That is something to be proud of!

As others have said, if you keep running for 30 minutes after you graduate, you should before too long get to 5k. You certainly don't need to worry about it now though. It sounds like your progress is perfect so far. Just keep doing what you're doing. Slow and steady :)

They are fibbing... they are...!

This is your journey... you are running it for you.. no one else.. never compare yourself with anyone else!

Listen to the replies... many of our most awesome marathon and half marathon runners have never, ever run 5K in 30 minutes and they do not want to!

You are doing FANTASTIC and whoever tried to burst your bubble wants a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, I still can't run 5k in 30 minutes but hope to one day.

At the end of week 9 you will be able to run for 30 minutes which is what this programme sets out to do and I suspect that the vast majority of us that graduate aren't running 5k in 30 mins by that stage

Oh the comment most folk can run 5k in 30 minutes lol, most folk wouldn't be able to run for 30 minutes

Thanks everyone for your encouragement. Much appreciated. I am going to stop stressing about the distance and speed but concentrate on stamina and enjoying my running. People can be very cocky about something they know nothing about. Thanks again

Oh this makes me so cross...why would anyone say that’s slow & who are they comparing you to?? Themselves???? Every runner is running their own pace, style & speed...this programme is designed to get you running for 30 minutes & by the time you get to Week 9 that’s exactly what you will be able to do...the distance is something you can work on after graduation...just like I am...I graduated a couple of weeks ago & I cannot run 5k in 30 Minutes...but I am working on it!! Don’t let anyone crush your mojo...you are doing absolutely brilliantly...just keep on doing what you’re doing...slow my backside....grrrrrrrr

I'm running 30mins and only hitting 3.3km so you're faster than me! Ignore the haters, 5k in 30mins is amazing but that'll definitely take more than this 9 week programme to achieve for most. That's if they achieve it at all!

You're doing brilliantly! Tell the know it alls to get in the bin! 👊

My sister is a Real Runner (so are you all, but I'm giving her a title because she just completed her umpteenth half marathon) who recently reported that her Serious Running Group Friends had run a sub-30 minute 5k just that morning and made themselves paper medals because they were so proud of their time. (Long story to say it sounds like you are doing great and your co-workers are telling unhelpful tales of rather serious, very fit athletes.)
