Gary's HM report.

It’s rare for Gremlins to do the write-up, but I lost my bet so I have to do it. Mfam’s legs hurt until yesterday. It serves her right - gallivanting over 21 km around the vineyards in 23°C temperatures is not for old ladies like her, let alone bombing around for the rest of the day and the day after, AND drinking beer with her friends.

You may have all noticed that I did my best to convince her that she would fail, but she still insisted of getting on the plane to the Alsace. (I almost got her onto the wrong plane, but she noticed just in time that although the two first letters were the same, "Strasbourg" and "Stockholm" are different.) When she got there, she got all soppy and weepy and hysterical, and hugged and kissed her friends like they were a tube of salt and vinegar Pringles that she'd found under a bush on a desert island.

Anyway. The run. We got a bus jammed full of transvestites, bees, Roman centurions, fairies and ducks. Mfam’s always hanging out with weirdos. Her friend Starman was dressed up as a busty blonde. It was a fancy-dress marathon and HM, but Mfam was there for a purpose so she had her charity T-shirt on, and I could see that she was nervous but she’d tied me to my chair, which is a bad sign. When we got there, we met up with Alex, Mfam’s pal who looked just like GI Jo and definitely doesn’t wear the same underpants as me.

Mfam spent hours queuing for the loo and taking photos of Mrs Playmo to avoid wetting her lucky C25K running kecks before the race started. Then she scoffed a banana, went to the starting line, did some strange “pile of hands” ceremony with GI Jo and the busty blonde, and watched the marathon runners charge past.

Then we were off. All packed like sardines. I’d warned her it’d be a mess – 1600 runners on the HM and 800 on the marathon, all in fancy dress and trying to run through the streets of a small town lost in the vineyards. Humans are strange. We ran through the streets, with people in their PJ’s, clutching coffees and yelling encouragement. I realised that this was a run than involved not only runners, but the whole community along the route. My fears were confirmed along the way – I was cowed into silence by the huge number of people who were there just to encourage runners along the way. Children were outside with water pistols, spraying the runners. People had set up their garden hoses to cool us down. Old men sat in the shade of their cherry trees and applauded.

Mfam was beaming from ear to ear, and waving gormlessly at little old ladies in their windows. She settled into a steady pace behind two men in lederhosen. We were overtaken by a shark, then by an Indian with a tomahawk and full feather headdress. Just as we were both dreaming, we were rudely interrupted by tutting and hissing behind us. Mfam turned just in time to avoid being elbowed out of the way by an impatient Robin, whose athletic caped counterpart had already overtaken us. She glared at us, checked her Garmin and bounded onwards. I admit to sharing Mfam’s smirk of satisfaction when karma bit Robin on the bum and Mfam overtook her in trail conditions later on in the race.

Things were getting disastrous for me as we hit km 6 –Mfam was on a roll. Then I saw my opportunity – The Hill was looming. She’d been dreading it, and had even gone to check it out to allay her fears. 1.5 km of 4% gradient. She stepped up to the challenge and made it up the first section. Then I told her to look at the others, who were all walking. Success! Until an old lady spoiled it all by shaking her fist and yelling "Hey! Joanna! Don’t give up now! Get running, you can do this!” They’d only printed Mfam’s bloody name on her bib, and now complete strangers were on her side. I decided to take a break, crack open a beer and try not to spill it. I’d get my chance later on, when she hit 18 k and got tired.

The journey was gorgeous. Mfam stomped through villages and towns with live music and spectators, where stands offered food and wine. We spotted the shark jiving with a chicken and a 1970’s disco babe. I tried to get her to stop for booze and tarte flambées, choucroute, sausage and more, but she headed for the water and figs every time. A little stitch would have helped me out, and she knew it.

By the time we got to 16 km, Mfam was thrilled but starting to feel the heat. She threw another cup of water onto her head, then took five minutes to drink a tiny schlug of white wine and eat a piece of pork pie. She even chatted with a sweaty Roman soldier who had never run any further than 9 km. Then she saw what I was up to, bade him goodbye, and set off again.

The last 3km were where I stepped in. She was bushed, so I told her she should walk. She tried, but her calves started to seize up. I got so excited, I nearly dropped my Pringles. But then she started to run again. She’d thought of you lot, dusted off her Mojo and got going again, and that scuppered my plans.

As she came into town for the final few hundred meters, the busty blond appeared out of nowhere and jogged alongside us. We turned the corner, and Mfam saw the finishing line. As she ran along the red carpet, a teenager she first knew as a toddler appeared out of thin air, held her hand and ran over the line with her, and they had a huge hug. Then the other kids appeared with the busty blond and Mfam’s bestie, and they solemnly put a medal around her neck. There was no bling for the HM, so the children had filched an extra one from the kiddies’ race the day before so that I wouldn’t be disappointed.

So there we have it. Despite all my efforts, the former couch potato completed a half marathon in 2h 31 minutes, plus 20 minutes of water, refuelling and chatting up centurions. She managed to raise money for charity too - here's the link, if anyone has a few bob to spare: lepotcommun.fr/pot/q4k4i85u

I blame everyone here for her success - the support on this place is a permanent problem for me and all the other gremlins I know. She would have given up years ago if it wasn’t for you lot. Next stop: the London Big Half. I hope to meet you and your gremlins there.

Brilliant, well done! ... an excellent post, very entertaining. You really put that Gremlin in his place!

Happy Running!

I'm sure you are quite capable of dealing with his mischief! I've come across him on my runs recently, he's certainly persistent.

Hahaha 😂😂😂 Brilliant post Mfam! Soooo funny but so inspiring too. A huge well done to you for doing that distance and especially in that heat. You beat Gary to a little sodden pulp and you are victorious 💪💪💪

That's a fab time too. We knew you'd do it x

Thanks, your Majesty. It was an eye-opener for me - I saw people running for different causes, a poor guy who had twisted his ankle at 7k who I could only help by giving him and abandoned sock and telling him to chill it with water from the stand, complete strangers supporting me... Amazing and humbling.

Brilliant!!! I hope you're as proud of yourself, mfamilias , as I am of you (even tho our paths have only crossed on this forum). And though I hate to say it, for all his faults, Gary writes really, really well.

I guess you can add another skill to your armoury: flying (unless you're planning to get off that cloud sometime soon)!

Good luck for all your future runs!

Aw, thank you! (Sniffs and wipes nose on sleeve). Gary loves writing, but he doesn't like to talk about it that much or he'll lose his gremlin job. Maybe our paths will meet one day - I've managed to meet up with nhs2015 twice so far, and she lives 'down under'! If you're running in the London Big Half, I'll be there too :)

That is the best race report I have read. Ever! Absolutely loved it. Well done with the writing Gary, but tough luck that you failed your mission, as I absolutely knew you would. Nah-na-na-nah!

2:30 in that heat, she did great, and not a thing you could do about it. Amazingly well done to Mfam!

mfamilias profile image
mfamiliasGraduate in reply to Tomas

Tomas, I am at a loss. I did my best to put her off going, then to get her to stop; none of it worked and I'm going to lose my job and be reduced to writing novels in a grotty London basement flat. I was put on Mfam's case for C25K, and she was supposed to give up before we hit W5R3. Now she's kept all her mates and cranked up the distance. Sigh.

Ah well Gary, them's the breaks.

Given that Mfam has now done a tough HM in difficult conditions, I am not sure there is much more you can do.

Cheers, Ali :) I'm very proud of myself - everyone as convinced apart from Gary and I. That medal is particularly special as the children organised a cunning plan to get me one, just so that I wouldn't be disappointed. Sooooo cute, I practically cried.

You really, really blew it Gary!!!!

She blinking well did it and in style and looks as fresh at the finish as at the start... what a super star!!

Clearly you have been copying her a bit, this post is superb!!!

Sorry Gary... her skill is rubbing off on you...what a run.... fantastic... I was there... (and if I had have been really I would have kicked you Gary!)

Wonderful mfamilias ... rest up and bask in the glow...

Mfam you are brilliant....:) x

So stick that in your Camembert pants Gary!!!!!

mfamilias profile image
mfamiliasGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

Gary says there was an unfortunate accident with his Camembert when I took a sharp left in the vineyards and he was reaching for the TV remote. He would love to be able to "stick it in his pants", but they are still stuck to him, and he's thinking about breaking his one shower a month rule and having a shower. As for writing, he does peer over my shoulder from time to time and jot things down on the back of the biscuit box. He has yet to look up the word 'plagiarism' in a dictionary.

Thanks, Flossie - you're a star. The support of this forum is just awesome - you lot picked be up and got me back on track every time I hesitated. You guys absolutely rock.

Well done Mfam - wonderful race report and hugely entertaining to read! Cannot believe there was no official bling for running 13.1 miles but you will always have the memories, the photos and your great time to remind you! Rest up well - you deserve it☺.

Nor can I - I realized today that I ran the entire distance from my home to the outskirts of Montpellier... It's a flippin' long way! Legs feeling much better today.

Well done, sounds marvellous!! Good on you - and for finding something Gary is good at. I think he must have been moaning to Graham as he redoubled his don't go out the door efforts this morning. He lost too!

ps: you look remarkably fresh at the end.

Yep, he was on the Grem'phone to Graham last night comparing tactics. The top end of me looked fresh but the feet and legs most definitely were NOT.

What a fabulous write up! I thoroughly enjoyed, and what an achievement! From a former couch potato to HM runner; you're an inspiration to others at the start of their journeys and those who are tempted to let gremlins get the better of them. Well done 😊 (Any any run that involves wine and pork pies has gotta be worth a go!)

mfamilias profile image
mfamiliasGraduate in reply to Emmyg

If anyone had suggested to me back in February 2015 that I'd finish C25K, let alone be running a HM two years later, I would have got a stitch from laughing. Everyone on this forum, and the programme itself, are pure magic. The marathon has eleven food stops, with a local speciality and a glass of a different local wine on each one. The HM runners go past seven of them. I only stopped for the one, 'cos I love pork pies. The last one was one KM from the end, and was local biccies and bubbly.... I decided against it, but the man in front of me was running with a glass of bubbly in each hand 😂 Of course, I will be signing up again next year.

Emmyg profile image
EmmygGraduate in reply to mfamilias

Oh wow, that has surely got to be one of the best HM's anywhere; a foodies dream! ☺️ You'll have to make it an annual pilgrimage!

Agree that this forum is a wealth of inspiration. It's such a joy to hear how far people are able to come, from one minute jogging, to running for literally hours! I bet you have to pinch yourself sometimes! Huge well done on your achievements, it is really inspiring and I hope to be able to achieve the same one day (and run with a glass of bubbly in hand would be icing on the cake!)

mfamilias profile image
mfamiliasGraduate in reply to Emmyg

There's no reason you shouldn't - just keep running, just keep running (sung in my best Dory voice). It's the third best-ranked vineyard marathon in France. I did the 10k last year with Kiddo (who tagged along when I was on week 4 of C25K, and has been hooked on running ever since). Next year I'll be doing the HM with BFF and Starman. GI Jo will probably be doing the marathon. BFF and I will be able to knock back a glass of bubbly then do a stylish Patsy and Edwina arrival on the finishing line :)

I'll have to have a look, but I've a sneaky feeling the date might clash with the Cambridge HM......it'll be fun to think of us C25K'ers doing HM's at the same time in different places......it certainly won't be 23 degrees!

Gary, I might as well be the one to break this to you. You are not going to be able to stop her now. Once you saw her log onto Healthunlocked back when she started C25K, you should have realised that all was lost. She's got the running bug and it is incurable. ❤️🙌🏃🏃‍♀️🏅

Gary says that he looks at motivation memes and would also like to point out that if Trump got elected, then in theory he has a chance of success too, even if it is about as slim as seeing Mfam tidy her desk up.

Thank you! I'm very proud of myself. The French generally don't give you medals unless you complete a marathon, so it's frustrating, but they did give me a decent bottle of wine and a really good quality T-shirt. He is an English Springer spaniel. Loves running, I now run mostly with him attached to me due to his love for chasing deer, well most things actually. He pulls very hard so my pace has increased dramatically ;)

mfamilias profile image

He looks lovely :) I have a friend who has a Welsh springer spaniel, he's a great dog. Must be fun running attached to a dog - I wouldn't have trusted mine enough not to take an unexpected turn when she was younger, and now she's so old I'd have to drag her behind me on a skateboard. Hmm. Maybe you should find yourself some roller skates and really make your runs funky :D

skysue16 profile image
skysue16Graduate in reply to mfamilias

Roller skates! don't think so! He does suddenly change direction or stop, if he gets a scent of something interesting, so I need to pay attention (stops me thinking about my huffing and puffing!). I will try and post a short video of us running, if I can work out how to do it!
