Back aching

I thought I'd posted something already but here goes again. So just started and did my second run today but my back is really aching! Mostly just under my shoulder blades. It's hampering my movement and wondering when it will return to normal - I'm already putting off doing things but this was meant to make me more active!

hi

no expert and im sure others will add more detailed advise but before i started c25k started walking a couple of times a week in preperation and i suffered with similar pains and i was advised it was my posture i was leaning forward to much and keeping my arms and shoulders to tense i was told to relax my arms let my shoulders drop and rel;ax and it made a greate difference not sure if this is your problem but it certainley will not hurt to try

I'm not sure what my posture is like- never even thought of that but I didn't think I was tense- though I'm still acutely embarrassed so will watch out for that - if I ever recover!

Bra problem?

I thought about that but it's only a bit tighter than my usual bra and I was only out about 35 mins, plus I don't think sports bras are meant to be loose - but I tried running a few years ago and gave up with the same problem (probably the same bra too)

Yeah, the bra should be tight (unfortunately, ugh!), I was thinking though that if the support at the front was not adequate it may impact on your back. It's most likely that you have a posture problem as the person above suggested. Tense shoulders and neck could still affect your back in the area you describe. Do you run past any shops or other buildings with largish windows? You could sneak a look at your posture as you run past them. Think about keeping your shoulders back, down, and loose (I know - a lot to think about, right? :) ). I like to shake out my arms every so often because it helps me with my tense shoulders.

Another thing, actually, is that running makes your core muscles work pretty hard, so you may be experiencing some soreness from that - which should get better with time :)

i'm going to try another bra and all the relaxing shoulders stuff, thanks. No windows but never mind, I'll figure it out

Are you carrying anything? Water bottle? Phone? If so, leave these at home or find either a pocket or a runner's bum-bag. You'll not get dehydrated during the run.

Other than that, it'll be something to do with your posture.

Nothing to add but I just wanted to say I hope you figure it out and feel better soon!

Hi! When I first started I also had pains around my shoulder blades. I thought at the time, it was just because I was using my arms in a different way to usual. I also had knee pains and a pain in my hip (which still flares up). I was also quite tense as I had never done this before. Generally, things sort themselves out over time. I am now on Week 8 Run 1 and everything is good. Lots of stretches (arms as well), hot baths and loads of water. If you were as unfit as I was at the start, niggling pains are inevitable. Good luck and I hope it gets better soon.
