Week 1 Run 1

Hello to you all

So ... I'm pushing 50 and at the absolute top end of my healthy BMI (5ft 9; 11.13 - and that's weighing first thing in the morning after the first bathroom visit etc etc!).

I've done C25K in the past and it always helps me get the weight off, so fingers crossed I can shift a bit this time round - though being in perimenopause doesn't help it has to be said. Crashing fatigue and sleepless nights means I often crawl through the day with very low energy.

Anyway, today I did the first run of the programme - struggled a fair bit, but felt great afterwards! Welcome back endorphin boost!!!

Wish me luck! :-D

Look forward to getting to know you

S

Wishing you lots of luck Sally and well done for getting going again. I sympathise with your feelings of fatigue since I suffered that too, hopefully the running will help. All the best to you.

Thanks skyhigh! Fingers crossed, it's worked in the past - so hope it can still work its magic ...

Welcome Sally and well done for starting again and doing the first run. How far did you get last time?

The magic of running is that it inspires you to eat healthily and look after yourself more. Its the perfect time of year for crunchy salads and lighter foods too so that all helps. I've also found that if I'm very tired then going out for a run acually reinvigorates me and gives me energy so my advice is keep going even when you're pooped! Also, keep posting here for support and encouragement and enjoy the ride! Good luck.

Hi Irishprincess,

Thanks, yes, this is definitely a good time of year to start - I did try in January but it's not the most motivating weather is it!

Last time I graduated and kept on doing a 5k five times a week for about a year, but then had a knee injury let it slip. It did work well for me though, so I'm optimistic it can help again.

Good luck with your progression too!

Hi there Sally, 50 is a good age. It is called the "purple hat" age. You see, it is when you can do stupid things, embarrassing your children in the process and you can just run away laughing.... You can just be a Senior Delinquent. Wonderful time.

You will find that running will give you energy. On my running days, when I come back, after my cooling down period, I am ready to take on the world.

With the program you will find that every day is better than the day before. You will get a couple of set back now and again but will catch up quickly.

Thanks nhs2015!

I'm still actually struggling to believe I'm 50 - how is that even possible!! :-)

I did my second run over the weekend and felt much more energetic afterwards.

Third run tomorrow and then Week 1 is done ... I see by week 6 we're supposed to be running for 20 minutes without stopping - astonishing!

Hi, Sally. 50 was my motivation to start this. I have one year to go (hence the name 'fit for 50'. Same stage of life as you (but shorter and much heavier)... (ok, 5'2" and 17.10 when I started week 1). Sadly, I'm still 5'2" but now 16.4 and doing my last run of week 8 tonight. I know I'm still very much overweight, but I feel so much happier because I know I'm on the way down, and anyone laughing at the fat old woman running is greeted with a huge grin from me. I feel proud.

Quite enjoying the fatigue too. Luckily, I live like a cat and have the luxury of being able to sleep whenever I feel like it, so I do. The best thing about sleeping so much is that I sleep through the hunger pangs and tend to eat several small things rather than three main meals. It seems to be working for me.

Good luck with the programme. :-)

Hi Jacqui,

Congratulations on getting to the end of Week 8 and on the weight loss - those are amazing achievements!

I did my second run over the weekend and had another little endorphin boost - which I very much appreciated. :-) I hadn't realized quite how physically demanding perimenopause was going to be, so hope I can stay motivated with this programme and improve my fitness because I'm sure it'll help.

Good luck with the final week of the programme - then you'll be a graduate! :-)

Hi Sally. I did the programme at 49, hence the name. I am 50 now and I can't really associate myself how I feel inside with that number. Inside you always feel like you're still in your mid 20s, just other people don't treat you that way! Just the other day I saw a notice up for the 50+ group for the elderly and I thought, oh no, surely not?! Haha it comes to all of us I suppose ;)

Hi, haha, yes! Why does all the marketing stuff call 50+ people 'elderly'?? Not accurate at all, at least I don't think so :-)

Thanks for the encouragement - and congratulations on being a graduate - hope I get there myself over the next couple of months.

Good luck Sally! And btw, I am the same height as you and your current weight is very close to my target weight, so I do not think you are particularly big at all. That being said, it is all to do with how YOU feel and at what weight YOU are happy. Enjoy the endorphins and all the best for the future :)

Thanks Cathalicious! I guess I'm very aware of having drifted up about 20 pounds over the last couple of years or so. I'm blaming the tiredness which comes from nightsweats with 'time of life' and all that. I tend to just want to flop on the sofa and eat - which just kind of makes things worse in the long term.

Good luck with your goals too - sounds like you've made some wonderful progress already! :-)
