W5R3 Finally conquered! But HILLS!

Well. I had quite the lazy weekend. Not at all the plan but there we go! I was apprehensive about going out today for the dreaded 20 minutes after the longer than intended break. It's been raining a lot so I couldn't do my usual fields route *sad face*

My mum is on week 3 - try Gedling Country Park she said. It's flat, she said. About 10 minutes in, I found myself stranded in a little valley with the only way to get out being to run up short but steep hills. My only other option was to run the same 50m stretch back and forth about 20 times so I gritted my teeth and nearly turned my legs inside out trying to get up said hill.

I made it, huffing and puffing and thought, I'll have a brisk walk for 30 seconds or so to get my breath back, it's not the end of the world if I can't do R3 today. So I had a breather and looked at the clock. With only 5.56 to go I told myself to stop being such a wuss and got right back into it. I reckon I only actually stopped running for under 10 seconds. So I'm not going to count it. :D :D :D :D

Looking forward to W6R1. I've looked it up - is the only harder thing about this run the stopping and starting element? Or is it a bit of a recovery week? I thought that because I've done 20 minutes, I won't have a problem with blocks of 5 and 8 minutes.

Well done lovely that's brilliant 😄  I found W6R1 to be absolutely fine tbh & I'm sure you will too. I was actually looking forward to the ready to run.....go part.

You'll smash it just like you did your 20mins!!

Yay thanks! I have a yoga session on Thursday so I'll be tackling 6:1 on Friday.

Good work, Hannah! 😀 I knew you'd smash it, and hills too. I also thought W6R1 was fine, it's just a bit boring. Beware of being too cocky, stay cautious and you'll be fine.

Thank you! Yet again I surprised myself. Because of my 4 day break in between runs I almost attempted an interim run of 10 mins run, 2 mins walk and another 10 minute run but when I got out the car I though OK, well I'll just see, it's not the end of the world if I don't finish. I'm glad I did. :)

Well done, and with hills as well!  I am at the same point as you.  Great feeling isn't it

I should have been keeping an eye out, what goes down must come back up, I just thought it would be a slow and steady incline on the other side, not akin to EVEREST. :D

^^^What they all said^^^  :)

Well done for conquering the hills - they are my nemesis and I avoid at all costs.  W6R1 seemed easier after the 20 minutes of running on W5R3.  Enjoy!

Me too. For the moment I'd like to build up strength, then pace, then when I can run 5k comfortably, I'll add in some hills but stick with 5k. That's the plan anyway!

Well done Hannah. I think week six is a stamina week. You have done 20 mins..  :)  at the end of Week 5 so...

Now try another week building up to one big run.. You know you can do it.. its just a case of getting those runs banked in your legs with that recovery walk and soon you won't need a recovery walk anymore. Promise it does work...

Good luck and keep posting.

Thanks Jan :D I though that sounded like it. I'm going to concentrate on keeping a consistent and steady pace with strong walks in between. Bring on W6!
