scary shoe shop report

Well after your encouragements I decided to drop into my local proper running shop today. When I arrived the shop was empty, so I told the assistant that I was looking for shoes to train up to HM distance. Also explained I use insoles from the podiatrist.

On that basis, she suggested I try on some neutral shoes, that wouldn't interfere with the insoles, and that the priority should be comfort and fit and that we should leave any gait-correction to the insoles. Sounded plausible to me, so she disappeared and came back with 2 pairs - one Saucony and one New Balance - both in the sale, and got me to try them on with my insoles. Although I prefered the look of the NB, the Saucony felt better on my feet (felt slightly more supportive) so I bought them. There was no hard sell. She did ask if I needed socks but when I said not today thanks she didn't push it.

All in all a very pleasant experience and I will no doubt be back. The shoes cost 112Euros (about 85pounds) in the sale. She said I should expect to get around 800 to 1000 km out of them and to go back if I have any trouble.

They are beautiful! I see from your former post that you ran in Decathlon's own brand before - Kiprun? That's what I wear for the moment, and I'm trying to find some Mizunos in the sales but no luck so far...

I live in France too - they look at me like I'm a circus freak because Southern French girls don't wear size 44... :(

This is where I get mine Mizunos from, I don't know though if they will deliver to France. I got 2 pairs for £130.

Hi mfamilias. I was very happy with my kipruns but apparently they are being discontinued. I went to a shop called Terre de Running which seems to be a smallish chain and they were very nice. Their shoes weren't displayed in separate men's and women's sections - they were just shoes.

I'm on my second pair of Kipruns, but I'd like to try something different now. I'll see if I can track down a Terre de Running nearby. It'd be nice not to be looked at like I'm an alien :D

Sounds like the assistant gave you great advice - she was absolutely correct to advise neutral shoes with respect to your insoles. I have custom-made orthotics and the podiatrist told me I should get neutral shoes for exactly the same reasons that your shop assistant outlined.

Congrats and happy running!

They're really similar to mine (except mine are green where yours are pink).

I love mine. They've been good to me. I think I've done about 800 km in them. I checked the soles last week and there are no visible signs of wear so I think they should be good for a while yet.

Wishing you many kms of happy running in yours :)
