Trainers?

Hi I have been reading quite a few of your posts and I am so inspired, I feel like completing W1 R2 today but it is my rest day so I will be sensible and go for a walk.

I would like some help though and I know everyone is different so I am not expecting a conclusive answer but Trainers what should I be looking for? I will get my gait measured/ analysed as I broke my knee a couple of years ago and don't want any complication arising from that. I have wide feet and a high instep. I tried ASICS Gel Nimbus a couple of months ago, probably the most uncomfortable trainer I have ever worn.

Any advice, direction would be helpful.

Thanks H

A gait analysis will tell you what type of shoe you need (stability/cushioning/neutral) but it can't tell you what exact model or brand best suits you.

My advice is buy the best shoes you can - expensive ones on sale are better than cheap ones. Look around for any outlet stores near you, if you're in London the outlet mall at Wembley has New Balance, Asics, Adidas and Nike stores. if you have very wide feet, width-fitted New Balance might suit you.

gait analysis is the way to go , they will be able to tell you what type of running shoe etc is best for you ..

The other reason to go to a good shop is that most of them (do check though) will refund your money or swap shoes you have bought following a gait analysis up to 30 days after purchase, if you don't get on with them for whatever reason. I think that's a fantastic deal when shoes are so expensive. I returned 3 pairs earlier this year.

More than anything else , they must be absolutely comfortable straight out of the box -- if they feel in any way at all to be "just not quite right" out of the box, you will soon find them VERY uncomfortable once you start running.

I am one who is very cynical about running stores and so-called gait analysis. Maybe that is because I don't have any problems with my feet. There is a very big man at my local parkrun whose one foot appears from behind to have an "almost" right angle bend at the ankle when he walks . Somebody like him certainly needs specialist advice - but I don't rally believe that some young sales person at a so-called specialist running store would be the one to give it!!!

I have to say I would normally support cynicism but the sales person at Up and Running had just graduated in sports science...

Hello, and congratulations on starting C25k, it is absolutely magic and the people on this forum are inspirational, supportive, generous and awesome!

WRT trainers, I did the first few weeks in my trusty Salomon XA 3D Ultra2 Pro trail shoes, which I use for dog walking.

I treated myself to proper running shoes and I went to Up and Running. They will do your gait and look at your foot shape and give you a range to try on. Your size will probably be a bit bigger dos your feet swell up when running- however I got 6 1/2 as usual. My feet are wide with high arches as well and the Brooks Ghost 7 was the most comfortable and GUESS WHAT! U&R are doing a fantastic bundle deal at the mo with these trainers whereby for £85 you get the Brooks Ghost 7s, AND running socks, AND running cut-offs, AND a running T shirt which says, rather ironically, 'only happy when I'm running'. So if you're anywhere near one of their stores the lovely people there are well worth a visit 😀

The only advice I can give is once you've your gait analysis try on as many pairs of shoes as you can until you get the right ones. For me it was a bit of a cinderella moment when I put mine on. They just felt right from the start.

I went in anticipating coming out with Brooks or Asics as they seem to be THE shoe and came out with Nikes which wasn't a brand I had ever considered.

Oh & if you wear specific socks for running in. Take them along too ☺ x

I went to Sweat Shop and came out with Nikes as well. The Nimbus, which I wanted, were far too narrow. The Adidas ones were too narrow too. The Nike Pegasus and Vomero were my fave ones. The widest across the toes were the Mizuno's

Try on all the ones they've got once they've told you what shoe you need. You'll need at least a half size bigger

I hope you get sorted out soon. You have to post a photo of them on here!
