Must NOT eat jam tarts before a run again...

Gahhh! Set off last night for my usual 5K ( oh how weird that sounds - still haven't got used to the fact I've graduated!) - I'd decided to repeat wk9 r3 and continue to 5K; I've tried the stepping stone and speed podcasts but felt like a return to the familiar for a while ( NOT ' Me and Julie' though...really haven't missed that!)

I don't know what it was...I'm blaming the fact that I ate two,or possibly even three (๐Ÿ˜ฑ) Mr Kipling jam tarts that our recent visitors left for the fact that I started fine; did the first K in 5 mins 32 ( maybe too fast and tired too soon?) but after that really struggled and found myself walking after 3 K. I tried to get myself going again, but just felt rubbish and heavy as lead...so I walked the rest of the way home ( about 2 K ish).

I felt awful - I never had to repeat any of the C25K runs, and never walked at all until I accidentally did the speed podcast and continued to 5 K afterwards! I suppose I just have to tell myself that a bad run is better than no run at all; at least I got out and did some exercise, and should put it down to experience. I'm off to Venice tomorrow with friends - they all run, and some are keen to run while we're there - so I'll take my kit and see if I can do better with that fabulous blue sky above me and the sound of church bells ( and gondoliers sniggering...) onwards and upwards, hey!

I think you are right - something is better than nothing and you still had to work at what you did do, so there is still a gain. A friend of mine runs in the iron man contests and he did say to me, that there will always be times when it will feel like you body just doesn't want to know. But it if you blame it on the tarts that may help you avoid them in the future. Have a good holiday.

I don't know what your normal pace is but that does sound fast for the first KM. Never mind, you ran 3K didn't you? Could you have done that a few weeks ago? Put it behind you, your next run will be fab. Enjoy Venice, perhaps if you left your shoes out you might have room for a small CurlyGurly?

Thank you CurlyGurly ๐Ÿ˜Š my usual pace is around 6-6.40 or more for the first km, so I was surprised. I think it was the change from running to a beat, which I'd done for the previous run - suddenly I didn't know how to pace myself! Maybe I should try to remember Laura's 'remember, it's just a light jog' while I try to get back to something like normal! I was definitely thinking of a friend's recent post about her improved 5K time and hoping to match it - but she's ten years younger than me and doesn't have a doubtful knee, so I think I should try to do what's good for me!

Oh and hmm, don't think there will be room - I'm really sorry! Even though I can't do hand luggage only and will be the only one of the group having to wait for my case at the other end ๐Ÿ˜Š

Louie Simmons of Westside Barbell famously says "Every day you touch the bar is a success, every day you don't is a failure."

It probably applies more to running than weightifting in fact. Any run is always better than no run.

Never eat Mr Kipling jam tarts again, full stop, though.

Thanks Rignold...you're right; those things are dreadful. Not even worth 'guilty pleasure' status. No. They're not.

Nutrition is important, especially just before & after a run, but I reckon it was more the extremely fast (but hey wow, what a speed, go you!) first k & probably a tired bod. Go & enjoy your hol, run or no run, & come back refreshed & try again. We all have the odd bad run, but well done for doing the run, feel proud of every time you get out there. I'm sure there will

Be nicer & better running fuel than jam tarts in Venice! Enjoy! X

Thank you MarlyParly๐Ÿ˜ŠI'm sorry for the late response (!!) but I've had a long break from the forum - life kept getting in the way! Yes you're right about the fast first K and tiredness I'm sure - I did manage a small (3kish but mapmyrun failed me!) run in Venice which was just great, and am still running - trying to improve my 5k time and hoping to get to 10k one of these days, so I'm giving the other forum a go too now. Thanks and happy running x
