Anyone suffer from a 'hallux rigidus'?

I am hopefully going to graduate tomorrow, all being well, but am really struggling with a VERY painful big toe! I seem to have no movement at the joint. Have been to my GP, had it x-rayed and am now waiting to see a consultant. Does anyone else have the same problem? The pain has become so bad that my foot aches permanently and keeps me awake at night.

Which joint? Is it the first joint from the tip of your toe, or where the toe joins your foot? Could be a bunion. Ouchy, hope you get an answer!

Could it be gout by any chance? I assume though that the doctor would have done tests for that.

My husband was diagnosed with gout a few years ago and it started with his big toe being incredibly painful due to what they call a build up of uric (sp?) acid.

It has taken me 2 years to find this specific information. Lots of options. If pain is in the joint, the best solution for someone young and active is joint fusion. There is a new procedure called metallic resurfacing that has great results.

Thank you all for your replies. Sounds like the joint fusion might be the answer. I'll have to see what the consultant says.

Definitely look into metallic resurfacing as an alternative to joint fusion; sounds to have great long-term results without fusion. My concern with fusion is that it can place too much pressure on the lesser toes causing metatarsalgia which just means metatarsal pain, but take it from me, is no joke. I'll be happy to walk without a lot of pain again, let alone run and I'm only 39.
