After these longer runs my Achilles is very tender the next day or two, especially after not moving for a bit, driving, sleeping, sat at desk etc. Is it likely to be my shoes? Or is it just being 56? (That's what my family keep telling me).

If you've not had a gait analysis, then do so. Go to a specialist running store and tell them about your problem. They may have some good advice that doesn't involve buying new running shoes, you never know!
Don't run through an injury. Little niggles and tenderness can build up into big problems. I used to think an injury was something you got when you fell over or pulled a muscle, but this tenderness is also an injury. If you don't feel any improvement after a visit to a running store, get it checked out by a sports physio.
I feel your pain Oldarn I really do. I had a constant niggly ankle, which swelled up post run for seemingly months. It does improve however. all of your skeleton will improve as you get stronger. I toughened my old bod up by doing exercise DVD's at home. Never done anything like running or exercises in my whole life before but you feel it's now or never when you're our age. LOL
Just keep plugging away. Slowly is absolutely fine and will be easier on your ankles and knees. No need for speed!
Don't take any notice of your detractors. Negative comments say more about them than you. Ignore em!
