Week 5 Run 3 - Really nervous

Hello,

So I'm progressing and have really enjoyed getting to this point but I have to admit to being nervous as my next run is my first long one (20 minutes) with no walking.

I know that a lot of the nerves are in my mind just wanted to put it out there that I will be doing this run on Tuesday almost so that I've got accountability as I have a tendency to self sabotage the closer I get to a goal!

You will be fine - the workup to it is almost worse than actually doing it. I found it helped to think of it as four 5 minute runs, and run slower than I thought I needed to. The first one is easy as you've just started and the second one takes you to the halfway mark. I sometimes tell myself once I've got over the halfway mark that it would be silly to stop running as I've already done more than half of the work I need to do. Let us know how you get on.

Hi :-)

I did it couple nights ago ! I was terrified! I kept putting it off for about 3-4 days.

But I have to tell u !!! u wont notice the time .. first u tell urself -hey i been running 5 min.. i used to stop here when i was at week 3(or so) but I can keep going cuz i m trained now to do longer runs.. oh .. 8 min already.. i did that couple days ago.. :) then think oh, i run the other day for 16 min in total .. and that wasnt that bad at the end! oh well if that wasnt that bad.. only 4 min left till i finally complete my first full 20 min!! :-D

Hope that scenario helps! :) cuz that's how i did iiiiittt :-D

PS Make sure u do gentle stretch if u havent done till now. I had pain in my knee after that... Now that runs become longer without much of a break its a good idea to do warm up exercise.

Keep us posted! I'll follow u up and check after Tue to see how it was :-)

Thanks all. Breaking it down sounds sensible and more manageable!

I have to admit that I don't stretch before or after so will take that advice on board.

I'll let you know how I get on!

Hi, I was exactly the same with week 5, from run one I was thinking of the big 20 at the end of the week. As has been said, break it down to 5 min chunks, you'll be fine, you've enjoyed it so far, imagine the buzz you'll get when you do it :)

Slow and steady is the way to go, good luck :)

I felt the same but you should be fine. As long as you tell yourself you can do it and take it steady you will get there. I always start off ok and gave a bad few minutes midway but recover well for the last few minutes. Enjoy.

You've done the training' you've done all the other runs, you are ready. Approch the run with a positive attitude and a little respect and you will complete it. More than any other run, W5R3,is about your mental ability to stay the distance and not so much your physical ability. Tell that monkey on your shoulder to keep quiet for 20 minutes and hit the road. You can do do this.

Don't know if you listen to music while running but I break it down into songs, it's about 5 songs' worth. You can do it!

Thank you all for taking the time out to be so encouraging, I really appreciate it.

I think you have identified that the main issue is one of mind rather than body. I got through it by picking a route with sections, and focusing g on each section as if it was all I had to do.

Good luck! You'll feel great at the end of it, it feels like a real achievement. I did mine on Saturday, my tip is plan a route - I didn't and just kept going, it took me 45 minutes to walk back home!

I did it!!

I'm not sure if difficult is the right word to describe it but it was a challenge and as much as I love Laura, after telling me I had run for 15 minutes I was expecting the next time I heard from her it would be to say I was done! But no, I still had 2 minutes left, hearing that nearly stopped me in my tracks!

I am pleased/proud because I had nearly talked myself out of it and a huge thanks to you all for your words of encouragement.

You'll be fine, take it as fast or slow as you like, keep breathing and before you know it, you'll be done. All the best!
