Annoying cough

Hi I have been very inspired by people's posts over the last few weeks which has helped me to get to wk 5. My next run is wk 5 3, which I am obviously nervous about! Over the last week I have had an annoying cough but generally felt well and continued with runs. However yesterday I felt very tired and generally under the weather so I decided not to attempt run 3. When should I give it a go? I'm not bad enough to need time off work, should I do run 2 again or just go for it. This cough is going nowhere fast so don't want to give up completely.

Hi mandap sorry to hear you're under the weather with w5r3 to do, that must be really frustrating...I'm not medically trained so I'll refrain from handing out advice on that front. That said w5r3 is a battle with your mind (in my opinion) and I would want to be 100% for that. I'm a great believer in listening to what your body is telling you. Good luck and I hope you feeling better soon. :)

Thank you, I was gutted yesterday but would be devastated if I couldn't manage it once I started.

I completely understand where you're coming from mandap.....I just completed w5r3 last friday....At least if you hold off running w5r3 (until you feel better) your determination will only increase. I really wish you a SPEEDY recovery! ;)

Thanks again leggit, I may try a morning run as generally feel better first thing and deteriorate through the day. More motivation when the sun is shining 😊

Good luck and I look forward to reading your "I did it" post ;).....the key is taking it slow and focus on your breathing. :)

Have you tried Pholcodeine sweets (lozenges) from the chemist? I found they were good at breaking the coughing spasms. Worked for me

The cough will go! They can be stubborn but it will go at some point. If you feel ok otherwise then give it a whirl.

Hi Mandap, There seems to be a lot of it illness about, maybe the changing weather? It must be frustrating to have a setback after weeks of getting fit, but hopefully it is short term. If it lingers, suggest going to see Doc. Best wishes

The general rule is if the virus hits above the neck it's ok to run (although you will need a wedge of tissues), if it's below it's better to rest. Coughs can linger after a virus has cleared, so once you feel generally better it's ok to go

Thank you for all the positive words - I did it! Feeling much better today and decided to go out this pm in the lovely sunshine. Slight problem was that I lost Laura halfway! I only realised when run keeper told me I had been going for 30 minutes!! This means I did about 25 of continuous jogging, how things can change in a day. Had a coughing fit when I got home but feel great now 😄

I ran while I was getting over a cough last week, using cough sweets, and I was fine, but then that night I was coughing even worse and couldn't sleep at all. I don't know if it's connected of course... but I would advise waiting til you feel fit enough, or do what you can of w5r3, and if it's too much stop rather than forcing it, redo it another day. I'm also due to do w5r3 next - Ah I just see you did do it - hope you stay feeling good - the sunshine must have helped :)
