Aren't there any other fair-weather runners out there?

I am so in awe of everyone who is getting out there and running even when the weather's beastly!

I have only two runs left before I graduate, and I'm desperate to complete them, but still I will probably wait until those high winds have gone away :D

I don't blame you! I am happy to run in rain (preferably not torrential!), but strong winds make it soooo hard. You'll get there in the end!

Thank you x Yeah, a bit of just-rain would be great, actually!

run with the wind at your back. Go faster using less energy.

I'm in the same boat - just one run to go to graduate....if only it would stop raining!!! It's so hard battling against the wind and the rain. Weather here is set to calm down this afternoon so I'm gonna go for it then. good luck to you in your final runs!

I'm completely with you, roseabi, I get no pleasure from battling with the elements as well as my breathing, yelping muscles, and running gremlins! Although I do enjoy a cold, crisp, frosty, dry morning run (though there haven't been many this year) - no slippery ice, though, thanks!

Oh yes, I love the cold too! I am a beetroot-face :)

its hard to get started on a run when it's windy and raining, although I've learned to like the rain. Wouldn't run in high winds by choice. You could try doing some warm up indoors, so you can run almost straight away, then you won't start cold.

Running in the rain does make you feel awesome though. Maybe this quote will help ;-) "Running any given route in the rain makes you feel 50 percent more hard-core than covering the same route on a sunny day." Just imagine how great you could feel graduating in the rain :-D

Thank you!! xx Although, if only it were just rain... :)

Last night ran in rain - and wind - and dark! Mr Flying Scot's birthday and his request was for us to run after work! No probs - except by the time he was home in it was 4.30 - but, as a hash house harrier, he was not perturbed. Well, it was quite an experience for me. He is quite a lot quicker than me so was very soon out of sight. Through the woodland by the river was lovely - if dark -had a lights to be seen but not to see. I enjoyed the noise around me and the degree of shelter form rain BUT - not seeing where to put my feet - and being shin deep in mud - and slipping and falling flat into aforesaid mud - made for quite a different running experience!!!!! So I felt 100% hard core when I finally met up with him again. Good job the shower is adjacent to the back door!!!

Loved the video on Women's Running - same page as Jo Pavey! Wow!

Good luck with all the training!!

wow, that IS hard core!! I was thinking of joining that club, isn't that the "drinking club with a running problem"? Sounds ideal for me (perhaps post marathon)

Thanks, hit the front page today, eek! :-)

I'm not loving the cold this winter. I'm finding it really hard to motivate myself to get outside, knowing that when I come back I will end up freezing. :-( I've enjoyed running in the rain in the past, but not now. Roll on summer! Knowing I must run today (for Jantastic) I got dressed in my running clothes, but had to wait in for some parcels. Parcels have arrived, rain has stopped, and there are no more excuses to make! ;-)

Off you go, then! ;) Good luck xx

I'm with you on that one. Given the choice, I would much prefer to run in nice weather. But we can't always get what we want (if we could, I'd get to lay in bed all day, but unfortunately that's not gonna pay the bills), so if running is a priority, then the weather will just have to be deemed less important.

Ah, you are right I suppose... xx

Have you got appropriate clothing? The wind is horrid, and ice is dangerous, but everything else is ok, including rain if you are dressed for it. I thoroughly enjoyed my run this morning in the rain, my jacket isn't as water proof as I thought it might be, but I didn't notice I was soaked to my knickers until I got home.

I tend to wear as little as possible :) Rain is cool, especially as I have just invested in a visor to keep it out of my eyes - it's the wind that puts me off! xx

in reply to roseabi

Yes, not much to do about the wind I'm afraid, the other day it filled out my jacket like a parachute behind me and I was pretty much running on the spot! Good resistance training!

Remind me to come by and have a butcher's next time you go for a run wearing as little as possible ;-)

I am pretty much a fair weather runner but will venture out as long as it isn't raining. I don't mind if it rains once I get going but not at the start. The cold I can cope with. It might be tricky at the start but I soon warm up. But wind...it's been breezy from time to time but not gale force. I think I would still go out - as long as it wasn't raining!

Ah well, you've all shamed me so I went out this morning! Actually it's not as windy as threatened, but I was running against a pretty stiff breeze for over half of the session (didn't have time to run to Brighton today :) ) Somehow, though, I managed to run further than last time - so close to 5K in 30 minutes now! Many next time, fingers crossed...

Thanks everyone! Abix

I don't mind running in the wind, but I hate running in the rain. I don't mind as much if I'm already out and it starts, but I won't set off if it's raining. (Oh, except when I was doing the RunStreak every day runs - then I kind of had to - and I hated it!) But on the whole, yes, I am a fair-weather runner! :)

Funny how we welcome a nice breeze in summer, but the winter ones make us shudder! I'm all with you on that one. I can cope with the cold and the snow, not very well with the heat.... and have not managed to get rained on yet!

Good luck for your last two runs!

Hashers are indeed the drinkers with a running problem - a very sociable, if slightly bonkers group. Runs vary in length and there are 'short/long' splits - where you can make choices as you run. If at marathon distance, or on the way to, hashing might be light relief!! Groups are all over the place, so no problem finding one if it appeals.

Unfortunately, I am in Canada and the weather is horrible. Absolutely horrid. Awful. Inhumane. It was sixteen BELOW yesterday with the wind. Horrid. In March! You probably have flowers? Buds on the trees?

I have snow. Icy roads. Snowbanks. It's awful.

I would give anything to be able to exercise in a nicer climate. I am a dual citizen and we are considering a move back almost exclusively because of our horrible weather here.

I do, however, hate the wind. So you have (a tiny wee bit) of my sympathy. The wind is awful. But I would still trade with you!!

Bring on spring (which arrives here in May)...

Sorry -- this post sounds very complain-y. I don't mean to shame. I am just venting because I hate the weather here so much!

roseabi profile image
roseabi

:) well, I was only joking! But I'm sorry to hear about your bad weather experiences - you're not the first I've met who laments the Canadian climate :( Good luck with your exercising, and with whatever you decide to do!
