Emergency mobile phone coverage

Recent chat over on our Facebook page, Beyond C25K* about the dangers of running in remoter places, the potential for slipping with the current weather, and the potential lack of phone signal reminded me of the following service. I copied the blurb from WalkHighlands website to save me writing my own explanation ( walkhighlands.co.uk/news/wa... )

"A new emergency text service has been set up to allow people to text 999 when voice calls cannot be made but there is sufficient signal to send a text.

Heather Morning, Mountain Safety Advisor at the MCofS, is urging walkers to register for the new service. She said, “You can now contact the 999 emergency services by SMS text from your mobile phone. This is going to be particularly useful for those needing 999 assistance in the hills when mobile reception is poor and there is not enough signal to make a call.”

However you will only be able to use this service if you have registered with emergency SMS first. The MCofS is urging hill walkers to register now rather than wait for an emergency. To register, text register to 999. You will get a reply and will then need to follow the instructions you are sent. The text system is meant to be used only when voice calls cannot be made and the system does not guarantee that texts will be delivered so users should wait until they receive a reply from the emergency services before assuming help has been summoned. The system was originally set up to help deaf and hard of hearing people. Further details can be found at emergencysms.org.uk. "

Thanks for this invaluable advice Swanscot. I looked for the FB page and put a request to join the group. Looks like someone might have approved it already. Activate looks like YOU! All the best. James

Thanks for the link!

I was going to run off the beaten track today but thought better of it and stuck to the main road as it was so icy and snowy.

Thank you for that link.A bit bizzarre that pre-registration is necessary, but good to know about it.
