Who listens to radio?

Hi All, I'm sure it was MilesYonder that commented recently that he listens to radio whilst running, does anyone else and what do you use to listen to it live (portable radio, radio headset etc)? All recommendations gratefully received!

I think most phones now have a built in radio -

Thanks Pigivi, I've an iPhone and no doubt it would do this but it'd be nice not to have the weight of the phone, it's nice to run with as little hanging off me as possible.

Somehow I'm not surprised..te, he. For me it was The Who, tonight, but live radio would just be a nice option occassionally (I think)

Radio 2 on the MP3 player - Simon Mayos' drivetime on a Friday night and Claire Balding on a Sunday morning. Takes ones mind off the running cos you get involved in what is going on.

Graham Norton doesn't know it but will be keeping me company on the Stranraer 10K in a fortnights time.

Thanks c4ts, these would be podcasts though wouldn't they?

No - I bought a Sony MP3 player which has FM radio on it so all live! Not sure that they make the model any longer as I did have to do a bit of searching to find it

Hi MissW, so was this streaming live radio, wouldn't you have to be constantly connected to the internet though and over the phone network??

I have one of these. I have used it albeit with my ear buds and not their dreaded headset.

It works ok and is not bad on the arm.

I also just use my smartphone and iHeart radio. Most of my favorite stations are on iHeart now.

Thanks Burgdude, this is probably the sort of thing I had in mind.

I run locally, within range, but I've ventured about 6 miles from town so far and it's worked. This is just with a cheapo old nokia phone. I noticed yesterday, doh, that the phone has an mp3 player facility too. Ooh

Yes, all this technology around us, it's knowing the best way to go sometimes!

I always listen to the radio when I'm out. I have a small Sony Walkman radio that clips onto my waistband. I don't even know it's there. In the week I listen to either Simon Mayo in the evening or Chris Evans in the morning and on Saturday morning it's got to be Sounds of the 60's with Brian Matthews. I like the fact that I never know what music is going to be on next and the confessions on Simon Mayo's show make me laugh out loud (embarrassing when I'm on a main road :-) ) I don't use the Sony earphones though because they fall out when I run. I use my Apple earbuds which I find pretty good. I used to listed to podcasts but when the summer came I didn't have anywhere to put my iPhone and I couldn't get on with an armband or waist belt. Happy listening :-)

Thanks tal31, yes I think the small radio might be the way to go.

Love listening to the radio when I'm running. I use my iPod, it's got a nike+ app and a radio app so it's all I need when I go out.

My iPod drops its signal quite often, is your OK then? I love Simon at tea time & Chris Evans in the morning, will maybe give radio another try. :)

Hi OG, yes, that's what worries me about an iPod app.

No my signal is ok and I'm fairly rural and tend to run on trails too. I don't get local radio stations but I get radio 1 and 2 and a few others.

I use the radio on my phone but you can get wireless headphone sets if you are really adverse to carrying stuff:

Thanks notbad, yes, saw those when I was browsing the net, not sure they look a little too much like a hairband for my liking, but thanks anyway.

I do Qigung Chinese exercises called "the eight pieces of brocade" as I get up. I like to know what happens, soI listen to radio 4 as I move my arms up or bend my body down! of course, I have a cup of Rooibos tea handy to spur me on!

I tried the radio on my little iPod for a while, have to say it did my head in, for 2 reasons.

Most importantly I run in forest tracks and the signal constantly was lost, always in a good bit of a radio chat show.

Secondly if I ran along the pavements were I got a better signal I had to turn the sound up very high to catch all the chat, not good when you are in among traffic. I also had the habit of stopping dead and shouting out "No way, he didn't do that" or "Crikey what a so and so" when I got really engrossed in a program it was quite embarrassing to say the least. I very quickly went back to my loud fast beat music. ;) ;)

I do love an audiobook when I'm running. Can recommend Terry Pratchett. Can't stand reading his stuff but just love listening to it. :)
