Having been running 5k or thereabouts for 6 months I have had a gap due to holidays and UK heat!! Possibly used as an excuse but hey!
How do you think I should get back into it ? Any advice. Should I just try to run for as long as I can or stagger it and do a few bouts of 5 mins or so?

I would say go straight back to 5K. Take it reeeeeeeeeeeally slow though. Keep at a recovery pace all the way through. Keep doing this for two weeks (3 times per week) and you'll be good to go. Good luck.
If you have any doubts on your fitness see your GP BEFORE venturing out on your quest.
I have not done anything myself for 2 weeks - and am intending this week to start up a 10 week plan. I ma feeling a bit sluggish at the moment - what with no running for the past 2 weeks and the slight remnants of a head cold. So I am going to take 2 weeks to get me back to running 5K non-stop. I am going to do 6 days over the next 2 weeks - 15x 1min run/1min walk then 10x2/1, then 6x4/1 , 4x 8/1, 2x16/1 and then finally 30minutes/5K non-stop. I will run those 5ks for 3 days than I will start the new plan which includes some speedwork. ( it is basically a 5K plan - but for non-stop beginners.)
You should still have a good level of fitness after C25K and 6 months of regular running. Just try picking up from where you left off and slow it down if needed. I remember running a parkrun PB after a 2 week hiatus so a break isn't always a bad thing.
