Shoe lacing techniques

One of the reasons I have 4 pairs of running shoes ( 5 now including the newest pair today) is that I have been unhappy with their "fit" . In Australia, most running shoes are stocked and sold only in a standard width - very difficult to get extra width shoes - and i have a wide foot.

I tried the "wide foot technique" of lacing as shown in this website katierunsthis.com/2011/10/0... and they do feel a lot better -- even my "tightest" pair seems quite usable with this lacing technique.

I tackled this job by removing all the laces and then putting the shoes on unlaced - walk around a little, and then with my fingers pushed the eyelets down to what would be their natural position if each pair of eyes were tied together as individual ties. Having done that I then pondered on which eyelets needed to be secured together and which should be left unsecured.

There are a number of schemes for lacing for people with high instep or wide forefoot or narrow foot or heel slipping

Very interesting. The technique they showed me at Sweatshop to make shoes snugger round my ankles not only helped but satisfied my curiosity about what the extra little hole was for. I'm not sure that's in that list, couldn't be sure from the photos/descriptions.

One other option that might help is elastic locking laces. They are brilliant.

I think what you are describing comes under the heading of "heel slipping" in this website.

Sounds interesting. I like the idea of individual lacing to feel the difference. Lacing can be so important. I know I am almost brought to a standstill if I lace mine too tight. I am just about to try elastic laces, as they are recommended for triathlon but I will not stay with them if they are not as comfortable as proper laces.
