Exercise between running days

I'm on the sick couch at the moment so can't run and have too much time to think! Can't wait to get back out there but am scared to go too far from the house at the moment!

I've read posts where people do other forms of exercise in between run days. Well, I've just swopped a bottle of wine for a bike and will use this to go scouting for new routes (Dozzer - if you're forming a recce company, I'm in).

Any thoughts on the merits / demerits of a bike in between running days?

Cycling is non impact, uses leg muscles in a different way to running and can provide aerobic exercise, so is a pretty good option. That wasn't a £2.99 rose from Lidl then?

Thanks IT. I'll fix up the brakes and give it a whirl.

It was a Chateau Neuf du Pape. But as I'm teetotal, it may as well have been a £2.99 rosé. :-)

Try to do some resistance/weight training, especially upper body if you can, your running and health will benefit from cross training. Lots of runners end up with Postural and Muscle imbalances due to mainly only training their lower body.

Thx, OlsBean.

Coincidentally, I had planned to check out the gym this afternoon so your recommendation is perfectly timed.

I'm off running just now so I'm swimming, cycling & rowing at my gym. Also do some free weights and sit ups. I was really suffering from boredom on Thursday afternoon which is a non gym day so I stuck my iPod on and went into the garage with my weighted hula hoop for 20 minutes. I don't class it as exercise to me its just fun and it lifted my spirits. Worth a try, see if you can borrow one first though as they're quite expensive. Really help define your waist. (tip more so for the girlies perhaps)

Jeez, OldGirl, that's a lot of activity. How do you find the time to do anything else?

Thx for the feedback - just been to the gym to find out about membership etc so I have this to think about now..

I think it is a great idea to do something.

I should point out though that although in over 2 years I have yet to sustain a significant running injury, I still have a painful dent in my thigh and can't put my weight on a forearm after coming off my bike at the beginning of September.

However, when RealfoodieClub starts the new Quest on Monday, cycling is going to be in mine.

Thx, GM. All things come with a risk, just a question of whether the benefits outweigh the downside, I guess.

Hope you get your injuries sorted out sooner rather than later.
