Walk faster than I run?
I'm now on Wk3, and have completed the first run (2nd one tomorrow), but it seems to me that I am 'running' slower than I walk. Is this normal? Does anyone else feel this? Is it just a feeling or can it be true? Any advice would be great. Thanks
Think I'm the same! I'll know better in a little while when I am due to run 1 of week 7 with my running buddie, who is now a seasoned graduate. She'll soon let me know! Personally I don't bother too much about speed as long as what I'm doing is doing me good. Happy running!
Not uncommon, I've found. By the time you get to week 9 you'll probably find your running pace has improved passed walking pace. But don't worry if it hasn't! weeks 10 and onwards are the time to concentrate on speed. Right now it's all about getting to a point where you're running for 30 minutes, nothing else.
Ha ha! Very common indeed. There were days in the early stages when there was a head wind and I felt as if I was actually running backwards. Stick with it and don't worry.
Agree with the others. Speed not at all important at this stage of the game, just doing the distances. Very best of luck with w3
Thanks for the replies so far, I was thinking it was OK to be slow and I'm trying hard to keep up a constant pace and I feel like my muscles are working - the ache after run1wk1, proved that (didn't think I'd ever walk up stairs again), so I'll take the advice and just keep plodding on. I'm so proud of myself to have got this far, and I know it's only 3 mins at a time this week, but far more than I have ever done before, and I have to say this really quietly I think I'm actually enjoying it. I'm so excited every time Laura tells me to walk and I realise I've actually done it. I might even become a jogger after graduation - I'll definitely buy the t-shirt!!
I agree too. I have proof that I still walk faster than I run... I tried 4K of a run60secs:walk 60secs pattern ( Jeff Galloway method) and my pace ( measured on my foncy watch thingy) was an average 10secs per K faster than when I "run" non stop!!! BUT I'm still enjoying it and for me it's about keeping going for 30 mins or 45 mins or whatever I try rather than speeding up. ( Might have to give away the foncy watch.. ! .....) Walking faster then I ran ? you bet I was ! You know when Laura says imagine a person on the other side of the hedge, they must not be able to tell if you are walking or jogging, well I almost yelled back, walking or jogging, they will think I stopped for a chat, any slower I'd be in reverse. That was around 4 weeks ago and tonight I ran 2.8 km in 25 minutes, still not fast but I am happy. Dont worry you are very normal
Don't worry about your speed at the moment, its all about building up your stamina at this stage. Good luck, and Im glad youre enjoying it because to me that's 99% part of the battle ! xxx
I definately walk faster than I run. Except maybe downhill when I almost feel like I am running/jogging . Uphill it's like I'm going backwards. The "running" bit is so much more tiring than the faster walking, so it must be doing good!!!!
The "running motion" for the time of the podcast is the key thing. Pace comes later... fitness and stamina are building now... keep on running!
I did my w7r1 with my buddie yesterday and after seeing her disappear into the far beyond ahead of me am convinced I must be the slowest 'runner' on the planet. Think I'm doing more of a quick shuffle. But hey no I'm not worried, am moving and finishing the podcast, which is the important thing. Happy running all.
Running is not the same as walking. When you run at some point in the cycle both feet will be off the ground. That is the difference between walking and running. Pace / Speed does not come into it. It's all too easy to go too fast, and do yourself an injury, and you don't want that. Slow but sure wins the race.
You are doing great just getting out there and working through the weeks. I found by about Week 5 I was starting to adapt to running, and the aches subsided a bit, then I found I could get a reasonable pace, and maintain it.

I do the same- it's the only way I can run without getting too out of breath. I am now running 2K after 11 weeks but intend to keep trying!
Thanks everyone, just finished R2 of Wk3, and it went OK, the first 3 min run was harder than the second, and this is the best bit, I started the last 3 min run by a bridge, turned round when Laura told me I had done 2 mins and I got back to the bridge, so 2 mins one way, 1 min the other - on tow path so not uphill/downhill, was a bit windy in the face on the 2 mins, so probably that. BUT I think I may be running a bit better. Strange that I'm already looking forward to R3 on Friday and its my birthday but can't let that get in the way of improvement
Both my sister and I felt we were running slower than we could walk we both graduate now and still go for 30min runs in the park we have kept it up I think as you get use to running you will speed up naturally that’s what I am hoping for my sister is 67 and I am 61 but I couldn’t believe I was running at all 13 weeks ago we couldn’t do 60 second runs never mind 30 mins so if I were you i wouldn’t worry about being slow your doing it well done x
