Leg ache after Week 2 Run 3

I've just completed week 2 run 3 and although I'm not finding it too bad I find that the bottom of my legs ache after each run. Not the ankle but the bit of leg above that, and it's right in the centre, as if the bone is aching on both legs. Any suggestions or am I just crazy. Surely bones don't ache?

Hi Saffi, that sounds like the dreaded shin splints :-(

nhs.uk/conditions/shin-spli...

This is a very common problem for anyone undertaking the C25K. I've read up on it after having some mild pain lately, and I think it is a combination of doing too much too soon, running too fast (basically stretching out your leg too far in front of you when running) and landing hard on your heel.

I've tried to keep it at bay by running more slowly, and taking smaller strides. This seems to help me land on my mid-foot rather than my heel.

If you go to youtube and search for 'foam roller' you'll find an exercise to relieve the pain. Some posters on this forum suggest soaking hand-towels in water and popping them in the freezer a couple of hours before your run. Wrapping them around your legs after a run can help.

But if the pain is bad and ongoing, then you'll need to rest up for a couple of weeks. I am not a medical doctor, and so please visit your GP for some professional advice. you're not crazy.

Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks Mark, I've looked at the link you gave and it does sound like that. I'm going to follow the advice given and also get some new trainers as the ones I'm running in a donkey's years old. Really don't want to have to stop as I'm really enjoying it!

Yep - sounds like shin splints to me (this is NOT medical advice). Try to avoid striding out in front of your body to reduce the impact on your calves (ie. land under your body, not in front of it). I have used Biofreeze Gel (it's pricey, but good) and ice packs when needed... if it's painful while you're running - stop and get it looked at! Some soreness is normal at this stage. Pain is not...

Hope they feel better soon!
