Plantar fascilitis

I have been suffering for a while. It doesn't hurt whilst I'm running but is really painful after for about 24 hours. My left foot is worse than my right. Oh and this is self diagnosed! Anyone got any useful hints, tips or advice please. Determined it's not going to stop me.

Firstly I would get it diagnosed by a medical professional.

My Father-in-Law and my own Mother both suffer with Plantar Fasciitis, it can be debilitating and very painful. They have both said that regular Epsom Salt Soaks has helped a lot.

I feel your pain - I have suffered with that in the past! My physio friend advised me to massage the sole of my foot, heel area, firmly/deeply with my thumbs, to roll my foot (particularly heel area) over a tennis ball and to pull up my toes to stretch my foot. I found it especially helpful to wear supportive footwear, ie, running shoes, as much as possible going about my day. Hope you get some relief soon.

Have a look on the web for videos of stretches -I've found that helps. I've also been wearing My Birkenstock sandals round the house instead of slippers as they give support to my arches.

Me too! Left worse than right for me too. I find it's fine when I wear my running does, hurts when wearing work does. Buy some insoles from orthaheel for non running shoes. and stretch your calves a lot.

I suffered badly with it too! I kept a bottle of frozen water to roll my foot on which helped a bit. Never walk around in bare feet. I got some stretches to do from the GP and the most useful one was hanging my heels off the edge of a step, which is always my first stretch and most helpful. It also helped to do it at random times.. Insoles or heel cups also help. I could never see an end in sight but I have no pain at all now so it will get better eventually. x

My husband has had this for 3 mnths and unfortunately you have to refrain from running. It can take 6 months to a year to heal and can come back in an instant if you over do it.

I have exactly the same problem - I bought some insoles from the chemist - Profoot Super Sport. So much more comfortable now. Tried orthaheel in the past and they did nothing for me. Also soaked my feet in warm water, which was really soothing.

I would definitely recommend getting your foot checked out by a medical professional. I assumed I had PF, spent lots of money on different orthotics and walked around in pain on and off or a year only to find that I had an injury and the orthotics were making in worse. I have come to the sorry conclusion that it is best not to self diagnose. Hope it gets better soon. Good luck.

I constantly wear orthontics (Dr Scholl, if there is a Costco near you, they have the best prices), but didn't like them in my running shoes. So, now I run without them. I still keep them in all my other shoes. I will sometimes still have a flair up, though. When this happens, I also wear an ankle brace. These pass under the arch of your foot, thereby pulling everything up into a better position. I usually sleep in the ankle braces when things are acting up, as I found my feet hurt the worst overnight. I was in agony as soon as I set a foot on the floor.

My GP also has pf. She recommended standing on a stair with just your toes on the stair, then lowering your heels below the level of the stair as low as you can go, then back up again, and repeating. If you choose the lowest stair and place a hand lightly on the railing, you should be OK. Also, she recommended rolling a tin across the floor and back using the sole of your foot.

I recently got rid of this, massaging, stretching etc had NO effect. What did work was getting new every day shoes that supported my feet (my old Doc Martens were very poor at support) and going to see a podiatrist who prescribed a set of insoles for my running trainers (which were also new). My problem was that my original running shoes were the wrong type for my gait and that my Doc Marten's were worn and were giving no foot support, once these two issues were fixed the PF cleared up within a week and I have not had a twinge since September. Do not go to the local store and buy a random foot support, as others have stated, go to a professional and get the correct support made to measure

I suffered from it for years when I was dancing. I just used to dance on it even though it was hell! I did have a heel lift which helped but I haven't danced for 3 years and it's healed now. You should seek podiatry help - they may be able to advise you properly as just bunging an insole or support in your running shoe could result in you injuring another part of your foot or leg to compensate. Hi, I had this, had to stop running for about 6 weeks, was so disappointed! - and feared having to give up the running, I was so close to the end (graduating) - was running 28 minutes, but basically was doing too much too quickly. I did go to my GP, and already had properly fitted running shoes. I did have it many years ago, but didn't know what it was. I found what nics76 advises best for me, ice packs - which gave great relief, rolling the foot and I now do the 'stair' stretches after every run. I have now progressed doing a run every 2 days and have made it back up to 25 minutes, so fingers crossed I will make to the end this time! I don't envy you the pain, and please don't continue to run if it is painful - it is one of those 'injuries' you cannot just ignore. Hope it improves for you, and you find a solution. All the best

I've been suffering with PF, also in my left foot, for about 10 weeks. To be honest, I've tried everything: stretching, rolling my foot on a golf ball, gait analysis with new shoes, resting from running completely and I have just finished a 5 week course of physio. I am now at the stage where one day my foot feels fine (yippee I'm cured), and the next it's sore again for no apparent reason - but at least I am no longer hobbling and for the majority of the time I am pain free.

I've recently restarted running again. I've gone back to week 4 and am building myself up gradually - this doesn't seem to worsening the PF, if anything a good run seems to stretch it out and help a little.

One thing I've learned is that there is no easy fix, I've read so much advice (much of it conflicting) that I've now decided to just do my own thing in terms of running, and while ever my foot isn't causing me too many problems, I'll just cope with the PF as best I can.

Viki, Yes, It's P.F because a year ago I have also gone through the same problem. For me, RICE, stretching exercises and P.F taping worked like miracle. However, you need to be careful while stretching because too much stretching could aggravate the problem and undoubtedly wearing a comfortable shoes with good arch support and proper cushioning is extremely important for people with Plantar Fasciitis. Runners world quite often has advice about plantar faciitis. My advice would be to get a proper diagnosis though, you don't want to do more harm than good and it is what you think. You may need to rest and do certain exercises but it shouldn't stop you in the long term. I know it's really frustrating but find out what you're dealing with then take it from there. Hi, i had PF in both heels, managed to get rid of it in the right foot after a couple of months by doing lots and lots of the stretches recommended here (you need the stretch your calves) and pain relief (frozen bottle rolled under foot was the best one for me) but the left foot remained stubborn. I have just had a cortisone injection in the left heel which hurts a lot at the time, there is no denying it, but has reduced the pain by about 75%.

I was so upset by the fact that being overweight and over 40 were the main factors in getting PF (as well as walking around all summer in bare feet -little did i know the damage i was causing!) this was actually the reason why i started C25K.

I checked with my podiatrist first and she said as long as i stretched a lot before and after running, had proper running shoes having had gait analysis and used an insert (i use gel heels, a few quid from amazon) I should be ok.

So i have kept running but not usually first thing in the morning when the PF is at its worse and i have given myself extra rest days in between runs. I'm in week 9 now.

I know everyone is different and what worked for me might not for you, and i know that the usual advice is to rest, but i thought i would share my experience.
