I am a bit of a wimp I think. Ice terrifies me.

Had to go down to the docs today for bloods and was looking forward to running tomorrow as have been staying with my dad for a few days and missed a run. It was icy underfoot and I realised there is no way I could run even with the slightest of ice as I have trouble walking in it. It terrifies me. So I am looking a gym membership for the winter. I know I will miss outdoor and will try my best to run Outdoors when I can. I just can't help feeling a bit of a wimp but I just freeze as soon as my feet go.

I'm with you! I've been looking into gym membership or possibly investing in a treadmill.

nothing wrong with being afraid of ice, that and illness tends to be my only reason to not run. You could try a local council gym, they tend to have monthly contracts.

Mind, they don't always have the best kit...

I totally understand.

Join a gym....also useful in very hot weather.....air con really helped me in the summer !

Pure gym is really reasonably priced, if you have one near you......

Snap! I feel exactly the same and will be using the treadmill at my local council gym at the first sign of icy conditions. I'm lucky that my gym is only 5 minutes walk away and is relativley new so the equipment is very good. I can also opt to pay as I go or buy a 3 month membership. As I don't like using the treadmill at all I find it cheaper to pay as I go on those days when weather conditions make it difficult for me to run outside.

Your not a wimp, I have also joined the gym the treadmill will be my friend for the winter I am paranoid about slipping in ice and snow, and to be honest I feel safe and happy in the gym when it's dark outside, the main thing is to find a way to continue running over the bad weather so you don't lose fitness over the winter......so go for it

Ice isn't nice underfoot and you're quite right to tread carefully.

You could still venture out if you have different terrain though as grass tends to be OK at this time of year or at least it is so far for me. I can understand why the gym might be more attractive though.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

I don't think you're a wimp Rfc, I think you're very sensible. Just think of the problems a fracture could cause - not to mention how it could set your running back. I will need to make a similar decision soon. We have a lovely flat cricket field nearby that would probably be safe (i.e. not slippery) to run round, though the thought of running round and round in circles numbs my brain!

Ice is the one weather condition which is no go for me - last winter I did a very scary parkrun (it wasn't icy at home, but our parkrun is right on the sea front so very exposed) and vowed never again! Somehow by picking my running days carefully and with my trusty Yaktrax (great on snow or thick frozen slush but no good on thin ice slicks) I managed to keep up outdoor running all last winter.

Thanks for all the replies. I thought I was alone. I am going to look around at gym membership today I think. I refuse to lose what I have gained.

Very sensible is what I call it. I'm lucky enough to have a treadmill, although it hasn't been used for months because I'd rather run outside (even in the rain!). However, I have no intention of running outdoors when it's icy. The risk of having an accident and not being able to run for months is far scarier than the propect of enforced treadmill running. ;-)

It's the dark I find the hardest which is why I end up just running at weekends in daylight. I can't imagine running on a treadmill it must be dead wierd especially if you are doing a really long run.... Soooooo boring!!!! Good luck and let us know what it's like...

Rfc a wimp? Never! Sounds like sense to me. I've never run on a treadmill & would be frightened of landing on my bottom but if needs must, I will (run that is not land on my bottom). Let us know how it goes.

I ran on an icy morning and it's scary! I won't do it again. I now wait til later in the morning when hopefully it will have melted. I can't afford a gym so I have to do all my running outdoors. I ran in the dark the other night and ended up in a dark alley and I trod in dog dirt. Yuk, yuk, yuk. I stank for the rest of my run. Ew LOL
