Back to running after operation

OK, tried back to wk 1 yesterday after graduating just before having my gall bladder removed 10 days ago. Ha, ha, a comedy of errors if you can laugh rather then weep over the whole thing. Put on the stretchy body over my sports bra - hoping to hold everything together, but barely made it to the bushes part of my run before I needed the loo (all that jiggling (?) yep again) at which point bending /crouching, really do not want to go over this, emerged to see a shaddow of someone down the way lurking.....the battery ran out on my MP3 player so lost Laura - not sure she really wanted to be with me anyway? Made it back home feeling sick and full of self-loathing. At least the 30 min walk (up hill) back from the doctors surgery for final wound check this morning went better then last weeks walk back, where I barely made it home to loo, so is improvement and will try wk1 again tomorrow if feeling brave enough?

Gosh 10 days after seems very soon. A Keep Fit teacher I know was told to wait 6 full weeks before she even started waving her arms around! Perhaps give it another week...??? Week 1 will wait a bit longer.

I have to admit with approaching it "gingerly", hence the 'test' longish couple of walks, but the consultant mentioned a week, unless I have remembered that wrong? Whilst I was discribed as 'very motivated' the operation is what it is and I cannot pretend that it wasn't painful after - cetainly still a little fragile. I shall continue with caution and not unless I feel OKish, am I making excuses?

No, of course not. Your dedication is admirable but keeping healthy is the best thing for you at the mo. It seems like your body was telling you its not quite ready but maybe try walking - maybe slow and faster for the week one podcast until you feel like you can start a light jog?

Yes I think that may be a good idea, thanks

I had my Gallbladder out in June of this year and the surgeon told me I could run after a week, which is what I did, I ran 5k on day 7 and 8, rested day 9, then 10 days after the Op I was back to running for an hour and I've not looked back to be honest.

Before I went for the Op I had it in my head that I would be laid up for at least 6 weeks listening to others experiences, but I was encouraged by the surgeon to get back to it, which is what I did. I know every op can be different, and individuals react to and recover from them differently. You appear to be doing the right thing though, listen to your body, stop if you are unsure and get yourself checked out but I am sure you'll be fine :)

Good Luck with it.

Thank you. I think you were fitter before you had your op though, as I had only just completeld r3 of final C25K the day before the operation. I'll have my uphill walk back from town again today which last week was 40 mins and hard going, yesterday 30mins and felt much better and today hopefully the same and try the early morning 'stagger' again tomorrow.
