What should I do on my rest days?

I completed W4R1 yesterday but feel like I have enough energy to run on my rest days. I'm trying to stick with the programme and skip one day between each run, but I'm eager to get out there and push myself so I can see progress. Perhaps it's okay to do a shorter run?

I think it's better if you do something else that is low impact on rest days. You may feel like you want to get out and run but there's a risk of injury if you overdo it. A lot of work is done by your body on rest days in terms of muscles repairing and building themselves up. Try cross training instead, something like cycling or swimming is very good and will all help with your running.

At your stage I felt exactly the same and wanted to run every day, however the demands on your body will increase as you progress and the rest day is important, especially from the impact perspective. I am now nursing a warning niggle in my heel which I think was probably triggered by trying to stride out on roads when I am used to being offroad. Treat your body with care and take it gently to build up muscle and stamina.

Let's face it.....you're an addict too.

Well done on your progress so far, its good isn't it!?! You can pretty well do anything at all as far as exercise is concerned on rest days but don't be tempted to run. Those leg muscles have worked hard for you so treat them with respect and you should stay injury free. Cycling, swimming, walking even and/or any exercise class or DVD will help build up your strength and stamina. I would go for things you really enjoy doing that way you be more likely to stick with it. Good luck with the rest of the program.

On my rest days I don't really do anything but I'm trying to think how I can slot in some yoga somewhere! I feel like I want more on rest days but also feel like I'm still getting into the programme so it's hard to work out! I'm on week 5! I do try and slot in a walk or something somewhere x

Have you tried the NHS strength and flex program?

Thanks for all the support! :D No, I haven't tried the Strength and Flex programme but now that I've moved into Week 5, I am definitely appreciating these rest days a bit more. Haha!

S&F is designed to be done alongside C25K and is not high impact. Give it a go. I used to do it and regret letting it lapse. It certainly helps to prevent the niggling aches! It is not too demanding and you will still enjoy your essential rest days!
