Greetings Runneroos,

Have any of you used the 5K+ speed poddy at all? I tried the stepping stone one and found it bloomin' hard. I need something to try and give me a kick up the a**e - program wise.

Your thoughts are most welcome. Merci.

Tried Speed after graduating. It's a challenge and I've only given it a go once but suspect it gets easier. Bit short though. Feel like you need to so something else as well.

Short sounds good for me at the moment.

I tried speed with my lad, but we were at my dads and did it in this field full of ditches and in fact nearly killed ourselves. So no I haven't done it since, but I would recommend silky Steve on audiofuel to get you going ( its the same music although I know you prefer listening to Bob Flowerdew on gardeners QT!!!!). However a bit of Silky Steve might give you the kick up the a*** that you need...?

Do you think Bob Flowerdew does funky running podcasts? I'd be sorted then.

The image of your and your son falling a*** over t** into a ditch did bring a smile to my boat race. Hahaha!

I would very much doubt it!!! I think Bob liked thinking about his flowers and his hair...

Haven't tried it for a while now, as it's just too short (and I now prefer the Audiofuel intervals) - but my first impressions of it are here ( healthunlocked.com/couchto5... )

Thanks, I'll take a peek

I did Speed quite often last summer and found the first time a killer, it did however get easier the more often I did it. But confess I still prefer listening to my own music and using lamp posts, sad I know!!! Hope your non the worse for doing 2 in a row, shouldn't think it will have done any harm so long as you were sensible and did some stretches after. Good luck for the next Speed journey.

Thanks Oldgirl. I love the "lampposts" comment! Hahaha!

I've tried it a couple of times and quite like the fact that almost as soon as you get into the 165bpm it's nearly over. I find by about the 4th time of the fast burst I'm really feeling it, but quite like it as it's fairly short so feels more manageable than the longer runs. I've tried all three couch to 5K+ podcasts but really need to find something else as I definitely need the structure of something to follow. Have you tried the Stamina one yet? Nearly killed me the other day and my back still hasn't recovered to go out running again :(

Wow Sofaqueen you're really selling the stamina podcast!! Hahaha! Haven't tried that one. But maybe next week....?!

I think it should have a health warning on it! Or maybe I should have been less stubborn and not insisted on finishing it...

Does your comment about 165bpm mean that in order to do the Couch To 5K+ Speed podcast you need some means of measuring heart rate? If so, any recommendations.

danzargo profile image
danzargoGraduate in reply to Nerdio

no, bpm is beats per minute - i.e there are 165 musical beats within one minute of music. Your heart will do what it will (heartbeat wise) if you run at this pace or any other.

LOL

Not musical as you might have guessed, though I listen to enough. I did think 165 bpm was a bit fierce for a running heartrate. Shall definitely try this podcast, as I know I can run quicker.

Thanks

I did speed for the first time this week... actually found it tough, BUT managed 6.5 minute miles average speed so I was pretty chuffed with myself.

We're trying it once a week. Done it four or five times so far. It's very tough. I'm taking teeny weeny steps just to be close to the speeds. It still kills me but slightly less than in week one!

Hi I like speed as its short and nice to if im short of time but sometimes I do about another 10 mins run after and then feel like ive at least ran for 30mins but first time was a killer ;-)

Hi Dan! I did 'speed' yesterday afternoon after my breakfast (working night shifts this weekend) as I was a bit short on time and had done 5k twice this week - I managed to run through all the intervals this week; last week when I tried it I had to walk for a few steps after interval 4. When I examined runkeeper it showed i was slower today ( which is probably why I was able to run all of them) so maybe I'll just have to always do it after 12 hour early shifts! NOT!!!! ;-)

I did it a few times not long after graduating back in March, but was not trying hard so carried on to complete 5k (as that was my goal then) now I am trying to improve my speed as daughter is on week 8 C25K and did 30 minutes last time so shouldn't be too long before she's catching up with me on fitness and speed! Oh, to be 27 again! :-)

Oh, and I have spent half the night standing up as my hips are seizing up from the Speed efforts, and sitting glued to the computer kills me! I walk away looking like my Mum just before/after her hip replacement op! :-)

That's amazing Poppy cos after my attempt yesterday at SPEED my hip is really buzzing with pain! Perhaps Laura found muscles that my body hasn't used for a while?!

Poppy2010 profile image
Poppy2010Graduate in reply to danzargo

Maybe! I found the back of my thighs ached for the first time & my rear, so combine that with stiff hips age is catching up! Have been pushing myself to keep ahead of daughter, up nearest big hill twice this week too! :-)

Speed is my favourite! If I've been away and a bit out of practice, it is the first thing I do. My aim, in theory, is to alternate speed and stamina, but can't usually face the 35 mins of stamina unless everything is perfect - i.e. have done a speed 2 days before, its sunny, no wind, I'm up early etc etc.

But with speed I think that after the 5 mins walk I've done a quarter already and not even started running, after the 5 mins 155 run I'm almost halfway...

Have you had any hip pain or leg pain after?

I LOVE the speed podcast - have done it a few times although still not managed it all the way through without walking a little bit.

I haven't found it gave me any pain - however when I first did it I mentioned it to my physio and she said to be very careful to make sure I was using the same length stride as usual, but just moving my legs more quickly. She said when you up the pace it can be tempting to lengthen your stride as well which puts more pressure through your joints. Is it possible you were doing that and it's given you some pain?
