How long before changing running shoes?

I've been a gym go-er and now am on W7 of C25K and i've had the same pair of trainers. They are running trainers but i'm wondering what the average is that you should keep the same pair before they lose their suspension etc and need trading in for a new pair?

Mine wear out about 600km mark, I've pushed on with my current shoes because the soles are in good condition, but now I've damaged my foot and it could be because the internal structure has deteriorated (that and my over pronation...) Sweatshop advice - listen to your feet!

The manufacturers advice is around 800 miles...

Don't go off the fact the sole has plenty of wear left on it as the sole offers no cushioning or support.

I have always been lead to believe it is 500-600 miles. I started to get achy knees with my faithfull very comfortable ASICS and when I totted up the mileage which I had logged on Goodrunguide and then Garmin I got a shock that the had done (me in them) over 500 miles running and about 250 miles walking (brisk). Time to get a new pair which I did and no more achy knees. It has to be said though that my replaced shoes do not look as if they were worn out at all. I now use them for gym classes and casual walking.

Ohh my giddy Aunt... I checked the spelling of my last post, but not the numbers.. It should have read around 500 miles (five hundred)

Sorry

I was told to look at the sides of the sole of them, if you see small horizontal lines on the side it's a sign that the sole has compressed and they're past their prime.
