5 x 50 Challenge I'm behind but hoping to catch up.

I knew I would find it difficult fitting in 30 mins of exercise everyday, especially in the week when the kids are at school and I'm at work. So I have got a little behind by about 16 km but my plan is to make these up by the end of the challenge so I would still have done 5 x 50 = 250 km.

I went out on Thursday and did a 5k run (speed) but it was hard work, i did most of it round the recreation ground (trying to run more on grass to save my shins) but I hate grass and really didn't enjoy the run. I got up this morning knowing I had to do something but knew mentally it was going to be hard to motivate myself. So all of a sudden at 8.15 I suddenly announced that I was going out to do the local parkrun, it certainly got me motivated. I know I would have given up if I hadn't been at a park run. I wasn't expecting a good time as I haven't really done much running in the last month or so, I was delighted however with the 30 mins 49 secs my Garmin recorded.

I know that I am much better when I have goals so I have my eyes on competing in another 10k at the beginning of June and then will decide if I think that I could manage a half marathon by the end of the year.

I've also been meaning to go along to the local running club and I think it's time that I did.

I think you and I are about the same level in the table with the same issues of work and family getting in the way. Doing the 5x50 has made me realise how little exercise I get some days - Walk 10 paces to car, drive son to school then go to work, work, drive home, make dinner, watch TV, bed! At least my office is on the 4th floor so I walk up the stairs.I'm now thinking I need to up what I do on "rest" days to up my contribution to the team total.

I'm in awe of you for taking on the challenge with young children and working too! :)

I find if I'm time limited that cycling is the quickest way of getting 5k plus under your belt. I find it a lot less like hard work than running too! Best wishes - I'm sure you'll make up your 5ks that you've missed. :)

Wilmacgh and morningglory, It's very hard with small children trying to fit it in with work too, isn't it? Mine are two and six, and I have struggled on some days. My partner was away for six days and I just couldn't manage it for some of that time because I was too exhausted once they were in bed and I'd done everything in the house too! Do you have any opportunity to go out for a walk at lunchtime at work, so even if you can just fit in two or three km it's part of your total for the day (or a bonus if you do manage more later on)? That's what I do. I'm also doing yoga at home once the kids are asleep or a zumba DVD on my non-running days. I've only managed to go out on the bike twice in the whole time and still haven't made it swimming, which I was hoping to do.

Wow....you're doing great Tati with all the extra things you are doing in your day :)Don't be too hard on yourself, you are moving everyday, whether it's 5km or just a few minutes here and there....it doesn't matter, you're not sat doing nothing. We don't have long left to the end of the challenge, but I think most people now feel differently about getting up and doing something! Keep up the great work super mom :-D

Thanks Tati You have my sympathy with little ones. I suspect if you could clock up the distance you cover running after them it would be a few k.

My boys are 23 and 18 but can still take quite a bit of my time one way or another!
