Week 9 and 5km exactly :)

My faddy nature really started to get bored of this running lark at the beginning of week 8 and my "rest days" have multiplied but I forced myself to go out for Week 9 Run 1 tonight and I think I hit 5km exactly :)

I set up a RunKeeper workout (had a ditch Laura after the music last week) and RunKeeper only gives you an overall distance (which includes the warm up / down) but it does give you an average pace for each minute. 5km in 30mins requires a pace of 6mins a kilometre and this is how my run tonight panned out.

Average pace for run 6:00min! :)

As you can probably tell from above my route isn't exactly flat (although if I was driving I'd probably claim it was) but it's the flattest option around here.

Anyone got any tips for staying motivated? The large number of graduate badges on this forum suggests that a lot of you catch the running bug and never look back, whereas I think my increased speed tonight was partly due to thinking "man, I hate running" as I plodded along.

I still have really horrible runs sometimes, but enough of them are enjoyable (well, enjoyable enough, at least when I've finished them!) to make me want to carry on. And I am so much fitter, that it seems worth putting up with the yukky ones.

Maybe you'd enjoy it more a bit slower (not necessarily, just a thought) - that's about twice as fast as I usually go!

Thanks for the reply greenlegs. Trouble is it wasn't really a horrible run, it was just "meh". I think it's the "mehness" of the last few weeks of the programme that is my problem - between weeks 1 and 5 the first run of each week was really hard and the progress you were making was obvious, now it's all much of a muchness I've realised it wasn't the running itself I was enjoying but the satisfaction of achieving something. I think I'll look into the follow on programmes and hopefully they will keep me going.

Congratulations on achieving 5K, one way I find to stay motivated is exploring new routes, seeing things I haven't before. Maybe a new route will cheers u up :-)

How's about listening to the radio whilst running I love running to Chris Evans he makes me smile and the time flys also unpredictable music quickens the pace then also news breaks each half hour failing that try I hate to say it treadmill and a good program by which I mean a ? Cookery program ! So your running and burning off fat whilst looking at yummy food ! The real thing that makes me keep going along with all of the above is in my gym we get a breakdown of all those training in the gym during the day so I have to come out in the top three ... Sad I know so for me just off now for a quick blast have a good day x
