One month on, wow what a difference.

So one month on, time to review. Today I ran W5 run 3, I am so glad I didn't check beforehand what was coming although I nearly collapsed when Laura informed me we'd be running for 20 minutes :) Too late to turn back, so it became a mind game to keep my tired legs going.

I ran on tarmac during the easter holidays as we were away, I also encountered HILLS and I mean real HILLS in Devon, beautiful country but I did cheat and walk up a few 1 in 4s as i reckoned my heart rate was probably equal to what it was when running. Unfortunately that mucked up my achilles a bit, however a visit to sweatshop and proper shoes fitted have helped a lot, I did explain to the sales person that I was the World's slowest runner, he was very helpful and encouraging.

Back at the beginning I made a bet with myself that if I got this far i was going to enter Race for Life, so I have, with my daughter who is going to train with me when she comes home from uni. Funny thing is, although she's only 4'10, she walks almost as fast as I run, so I think she may well lap me :)

Going to start boot camp next week at the rugby club as season is now over. I did it last year, but a bit worried as I know i will ache for the first 2 weeks, but I can't afford to drop runs or I won't be ready for the 5k. Boot camp is on a Tuesday and Thursday, so my schedule looks like this

Friday Run

Saturday rest

Sunday Run

Monday rest

Tuesday Boot camp

Weds rest

Thursday Boot camp

Friday run

either way I am going to have to run the day after boot camp once, although sometimes I get more sore 2 days after;

I will probably repeat W5r3 on Sunday before moving on to week 6,

watch this space!

Well they do say that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger!

Joking apart, if you do start to feel exhausted, you could put in an extra rest day occasionally - while you're aiming to run 5k for the Race for Life, if necessary you can walk some of it (I've walked almost all of it twice before, and not been anywhere near the back!), and it's probably better to be fit enough to run most of it than to be laid up with injured legs! Also, it's worth being aware that most people are running about 4k by week 9, only a few get up to 5k in 30 minutes. But in a race, often people surprise themselves and keep going longer/faster than they'd thought they could.

Anyway, enough rabbiting on - enjoy it, and have fun doing something great with your daughter (even if she does run off and leave you!) :)
