I am 63 and diagnosed about 7 years ago, smoked for a few more years after that. I did give up the smoking just over a year ago and started regular exercise to get the heart rate up and get breathless. I feel much better than I did a year ago, in fact I don't think

OOPs I hit enter...anyway I was going to say that I don't think I feel limited by the diagnosis. Sure I can get short of breath sometimes, but at 63 who doesn't? I really don't think it has changed much of anything.

Do you use oxygen or what are your numbers reading..

I was diagnosed ..but waiting for my breathing test results to see how bad

I don't use O2, my saturation numbers based on fingertip O2 measurement are 96 or above. When doing breathless exercises, they sometimes drop to 93 but recover quickly. I was 50% of predicted fev1.

Welcome Pauljil54, important to find some way to stretch your lungs, swimming if you can is good, gym too but a lot of people find it imposing a regime. A good walk will do much the same but keep comfortable and avoid people coughing and sneezing especially at this time of year. Tai Chi I think is great but I find it works only for some. On this site you'll get plenty of advice on living with this disease.

Take your medicine, exercise in some way and stay off Google.

Hope you keep well

Sound advice my friend that will be followed. Typically I have an arthritic track in my knees, never rains unless pours, bit when that is done I'm looking forward to tell gym. I was on 4 session a a week this time last year so there is another personal target.

Once again thank you

Tai Chi is great for joints too

Keeps them supple while waiting to get back to gym

Good morning Paul. I was diagnosed with emphysema and copd in June last year. It was worrying at first but having followed what the consultant told me I believe I have things as under control, as it can be. I am on a inhaler 2 times a day and I use Ventilin as and when needed. I go to Pulmonary rehab which in my opinion has been one of my biggest assets, so if you can, ask about the rehab. Keep a positive attitude if you can, I know it’s not always that easy. Good luck to you. 👍🤓

Great advice Roy. Thank you. Specially keeping positive when events appear to be agin you.

Many thanks and speedy recovery

Hi Pauljl54, I am 61 years young :). I was diagnosed with emphysema and lung cancer almost 5 years ago. I had been smoke free for about 13 years at that point. My oncologist told me that the emphysema was pretty much a given even if I had never smoked because I grew up in a smoking household and a time when you were allowed to smoke everywhere you went (even in hospitals).

I use an inhaler twice a day and carry an emergency inhaler that I have never used. I now sleep with a CPAP machine because I also have sleep apnea. FUN WOW!

I do my best to eat healthy. I make it a point to stay away from anyone I know is sick. I avoid crowds. I walk as much as I can and I am trying to get down to a healthier weight.

All you can do is take care of yourself the best you can.

Thank you Katherine. Your candid assessment is inspiring as is your stoic attitude. May I find your strength.

Take care Paul

Thank you for reaching out. Hope you have a good support system? Partner, children, etc. If you have to go on O2 you lose your independence. At least that is what I am grappling with. You need their help in so many ways. Rehab is important to keep your lungs working under guided stress. I can't do it now because of COVID. Inhalers keep our lungs open, but they dry up the gums. Mine have receeded so I will need dentures soon. I have a portable o2 unit which gives me some freedom that is if I am having a good breathing day. If someone is available to go with me. Depends on the weather too. I don't mean to be morbid, but I have been traveling down the COPD road for several years now. I am 79.
