How can I support my mum 300 miles away in lockdown?

My mum has just been diagnosed with cancer and I really want to support her through this but living 300 miles away and in lockdown I’m feeling pretty useless. She will be having surgery in the coming weeks and is very nervous about it. For those who have gone through it what was the most helpful, practical and kindest thing someone has done for you? Thank you in advance.

Hello Pinkoctopus1, I'm sorry to hear about your Mom, it must be hard being so far away from her. Does she have friends or family that are local to her that will be there for her in advance and after surgery? Maybe you could help coordinate what she needs (people checking in on her, trips to the store, etc.)?

Sometimes things that mean the most can be practical, such as coordinating meals or transportation. Other times, just sending a card, photograph or letter letting her know how much she means to you, can lift spirits.

Depending on what type of surgery she's having, there may be specific needs she'll have for recovery. Fuzzy or comfortable socks can be a nice gesture. Do you know what kind of surgery she is having?

Please keep us posted.

Hi Pink

Just seeking out advice is a super start to helping her...shows how caring you are.

I haven't seen my daughter since Christmas and i have had since then a long illness & finally an operation, a few weeks back and finally they could diagnose with bowel cancer.

My lovely daughter went to her aunt's house, who was also sick and to help her through lockdown & shield her.. I found her care & love through our regular talks & texts & seeing her on my phone makes me feel she's with me...listening helps and letting me be mom to her and help her too, 😃.... Sometimes we just send hearts or a picture or a link that we think the other would like.

I was so pleased to get my operation as I knew I was going to start getting better without it, it was held up because of covid..

There are a few organisations that your mother can talk to about how she is feeling or what it entails...or you...

I could go on & on...

There are always practical things you can do from ensuring she getting food delivered, has hand gel & facemasks if she going out for appt. etc. Or just some nice handcream or roll on essential oil ......

Wishing you both well...hoping to see my daughter before she heads back to university.....as we both been sheilding, she for my sister....

I am happy that she is happy & she working from my sisters which is great for both of them....ml
