Telephone consultant but still need to go to Hospital for blood test

I have not seen my consultant for a year now (covid precautions of course.)

2 telephone appointments. But in preparation for next week's one I had to go into the hos[ital for blood tests. Not a great experience. Hematology is in a totally closed in, windowless area that never seems particularly healthy at the best of times. Still there was good social distancing, masks etc.

It just seems slightly ridiculous that I go in for that but my actual check up will be over the phone. I'll answer questions and check my glands but no substitute for the usual inspection.

I don't even have my haematologist any more...... I was refered back to my GP..... I now have an annual blood test, that is overseen by my GP...... That doesn't fill me with confidence...

What’s wrong with that? Exactly the same for me and it works very well. I am sure you will discuss if you have any concerns.

Don’t worry too much. If they see anything untoward in your blood results they will not hesitate to bring you in, Their main aim is to keep us safe from Covid.

Make sure you draw up a list of things you want to discuss so you don’t forget anything.

I agree that nothing beats ‘face to face’ but I think telephone consultations are going to be the way of the future. I’ve had two now and they do have their advantages.

I have blood tests carried out for unrelated conditions at two different UK hospitals which are in different health areas. The one for my regular CLL tests is very well organised with an online appointment system and instructions not to enter the hospital more than 5 minutes before your appointment time and to go on your own unless it is imperative to have a carer. There is a good one way system round the corridors and an uncrowded waiting area with seats well spaced. Everyone wears masks.

BUT in the other hospital I attend, there is no booking system for a blood test and you just turn up and have to wait your turn in the waiting room. There are many people who turn up with partners who sit and wait with them, totally unnecessary. Whilst mask wearing is compulsory, there is no one way system in operation.

In both hospitals however, the area in which the blood test is carried out is cramped with no ventilation other than the normal air con - Not good.
