Can I get a flu vaccination ?

I have CLL and take Imbruvica. After 10 cycles the Imbruvica produced excellent improvement, near normal range WBC 11, platelets 175 . Question: Can I get a flu vaccination ? If yes, the extra potent ?

The first rule with any vaccine and Cll is to check with your Cll specialist.

That said, generally speaking the flu vaccine which is injected is recommended for Cll patients as are pneumonia vaccines. The flu vaccine mist which is a live vaccine is not recommended, nor are any live vaccines for that matter.

But check with your doctor first for all vaccines. I have had flu, pneumonia and shingrix vaccines without any problem. I need to have prevnar pneumonia vaccine and have been lazy about getting that done. Maybe I’ll do it this week.

Thank you very much! Now for me, in my case the hematologist just informed me, that I can get the annual flu shot.

I've been on Imbrutinib since March 2018. I had the extra strength flu vaccination last year and will have it again in two weeks time.

Had my jab yesterday. No side effects (including bleeding) apart from an aching arm for the rest of the day.

I just asked Dr Wierda if I could take my usual flu shot. I always get the quad or four strain shot. I hate needles so why not make it count if I’m getting stuck.

I started on ibrutinib 6 weeks ago after 4 rounds of obinutuzamab. All labs are normal now. I’m still on Allopurinol and Valcyclovir daily.

I was told and I quote, “It’s okay to take it”.

How well it works, nobody can answer but whatever I can do is better than nothing. More importantly, if everyone else got the shot, I would be better off. It’s called the “herd immunity “.
