Is BM transplant becoming more popular?

Is BM transplant the standard care for treatment now? I have been reading more and more posts about people heading towards transplants...

Hi Bchittineni,

There are many previous discussions here about transplants, you will find many links on this page in a box labeled "Related Posts". On a computer screen it will be upper right corner, on mobile devices it's way below.

The more common term is SCT, Stem Cell Transplant. My impression is they are much more common among the other NHL's, Multiple Myeloma, DLBCL, and usually used as a last resort for CLL.

Your CLL Expert doctor should be able to discuss this further.

It is from my understanding that the new treatments that are not to far in the future are not only to replace Chemotherapy but Stem Cell Transplant. We are entering in to a new era. I feel it when I talk with my CLL Specialist and my former one. STAY STRONG- A CURE IS COMING SOONER THAN LATER. J.R.

Yeah, it's kinda funny how long stem cell stayed in the limelight- in politics. But, I like the idea these doctors are looking at growing our tumors in petty dishes and individualizing combination attacks based on less intrusive experimenting (or risky) trial & error.

This might be a case of sample bias - as many others have pointed out before me, those who are symptomatic/needing treatment, and particularly needing a risky treatment like transplant, are more likely to post on forums like this one. Actually, the number of transplants for CLL is going down as targeted therapies are becoming ever more effective. I remember a video with Dr John Gribben in which he says as much, but unfortunately I can't find the link!

My husband went through a BMT this past November only because there was nothing else left for us to try. He was experiencing his 3rd relapse and also dealing with 17P, it was an extremely difficult decision to make.

Fortunately he has been doing well but BMT is a marathon.

I really think it depends on what your CLL prognostic markers are, and which specialist you are seeing. You may see more discussion here because it is a rather huge choice to make if it is an option. As BettinaB said, sample bias.
