My oncologist is retiring (told today)

I had a visit with my CLL doctor today, and was told he was retiring. I live in a rural area of Virginia and have been looking for a CLL doctor at UVA in Charlottesville, VA. I've looked over lists and just don't know where to start. Any suggestions?

Thank you for any help.

Wendy

Always a little unsettling when you lose a medical professional whom you have come to trust.

Professionals, who specialise in something, usually know others in the same speciality from attending conferences etc. Have you tried asking your current doctor to recommend someone ?

Yes, he'll have a replacement. My community is rural, I think I could benefit from a larger medical community. But, I may be wrong.

Thanks for the suggestion. I associate it.

Wendy, the Chief of Hematology at UVA is a CLL specialist. He is my doctor and he and his staff are wonderful! Dr. Michael E. Williams.

The nearest "big name" CLL docs appear to be dr. Cheeson in Washington DC or Dr. Ian Flinn in Tennessee (not terribly close). That's from looking at a map sitting in California. You could call their offices, or LLS.org to ask about someone closer. LLS knows the doctors who specialize, as they use them for breakout sessions at conferences.

I see Michael Williams at UVA. You do have to apply to him as he is over all of oncology/hematology. It helps if you say he can have blood for his study on what causes CLL.

Dr Williams teaches oncology and hematology so you can be sure he is up to date.
