Interesting information about rising ALC numbers

Hi everyone, I was diagnosed with CLL about 2 years ago and aside from a slowly increasing ALC count things have been pretty good but I recently had a dramatic jump in my ALC which caused me some concern and to wonder if my disease had taken a turn for the worse. However, after doing some research I discovered that corticosteroids can lead to an elevated ALC count and as it turns out I had started taking Flonase nasal spray to help with some sinus issues about a week before my blood test. So I stopped taking Flonase and had my blood work redone about two weeks later and my ALC returned to their previous levels. So I thought I would share this information with the hope it will spare someone out there who finds themselves in a similar situation the needless panic that I went through. Cheers

Hi Benlouie,

Thnks for the info. I have taking Azonaire (mometasone furoate) for some months since I had a flu bout. My ALC numbers have been going up now 57.15 in June. Up from 48.08 in March. Blood work tomorrow and Dr. Visit next week. Will be interested to see results and talk to my Oncol./Hemo in the meantime will lay off the Azonaire.

Will let you know what he says ?

Hi Benlouie,

Just an update on my last blood tests in reference to your post and my earlier reply.

I stopped using a nasal spray a week before my tests it seems as though the spray Azonaire had no effect as my ALC went up to 62 from 59.

Any comments from anyone as to why my Oncologist says we will start FCR soon. My ALc has just doubled in 15 months. No other major symptoms. No swollen nodes, occasion night sweats (one ) in a month.generally feel ok some tiredness. Did no interfere with my Hawaii holiday against my oncol. Advice.Other readings. Hemo. 140.Wbc 68. Neuroph.4.08.Mono 1.36.Platlets 236.Mono 1.36.

I have great confidence in my Oncolo/Hemo. But should i get a second opinion from a CLL specialist before I consent to treatment. I am 72 years young I hope.

Joffre

You haven't mentioned anything that would lead to treatment from the International Workshop (iWCLL) Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of CLL: bloodjournal.org/content/11...

See section 4 and ask your oncologist why 'we' will start FCR soon. If not satisfied, seek a second opinion!

Thanks Neil . I was hoping for some enlightenment.

Is there later Guidelines than 1996 ?
