Persistent sore throat

I have had a sore throat on and off since November 2015 with laryngitis and cough. Have had 2 courses of antibiotics but sore throat has never really gone away. The cough is worse at night and first thing in the morning. Should I be concerned? I don't know what else my GP could do as the antibiotics do not appear to have worked.

Has anybody any ideas?

Ask your doctor to do a throat swab culture to identify the bug that is causing your sore throat. Then your doctor can hopefully prescribe a treatment that has a better chance of working!

Thank you. I'll try that.

Marisa & Neil,

I agree that you should continue to pester your GP or CLL specialist -- after several weeks of a persistent cough and blocked sinuses AND Antibiotics -- mentioning this to my Clinical Nurse and her taking a throat swab --- identified Swine Flu -- antiviral medications – oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) help relieve my symptoms and reduce the risk of serious complications.

Hi another thought is acid reflux from your stomach. See whether you can get that also investigated. Best wishes

Nocturnal symptoms of long duration are rarely infectious in origin. Nocturnal cough and sore throat are very suggestive of gastroesophageal reflux as jangreen noted above. Other symptoms may include hoarseness and a sensation of post-nasal drip. In addition, obstructive sleep apnea may predispose to gastroesophaheal reflux and also may cause a sore throat. Hope this helps.

Your cough may be caused by sinus problems, particularly in the winter when the air is very dry . To help my sinus problem I use both saline nose spray and MyPureMist ($150 at amazon.com).

I've had much the same thing a time or two, always in the winter. Mountain cedar spores kick my sinuses off and the nasal mucous drip gets my throat inflamed, which keeps the sinus dripping in an endless cycle.

Antibiotics can't cure it because it isn't bacterial, they just stop a bacteria from joining in. My doc uses a short coarse of a steroid (prednisone) to knock down the inflamation backed up by 10 days of amoxicillin plus night time use of a quick acting OTC antihistamine (benydril)

I've successively cured it once using just anti-histamines. 24 hour Claritin (loratadine) plus night time benadril. You wake up the next morning with a headache from the double dose but at least you get a near normal night's sleep.

Might not be wise to use that all-antihistamine regime if you have any heart problems. Check with your doc first if you do.
